• Opening covers or removing parts can lead to live parts being
exposed, unless this can be performed manually. Connection
points can also be live. Before being balanced, serviced or
repaired or having any parts or componentry replaced, if the
appliance must be open, it must first be isolated from any
source of voltage or voltage circuits. If, subsequently, it is
absolutely necessary to balance, service or repair the open
appliance while live, this must be carried out by a qualified
technician familiar with the risks involved and the relevant
regulations (VDE 0100, VDE 0701, VDE 0683).
• Only use the measurement adapter if the housing is securely
closed and screwed down.
• Before each measuring operation, ensure that you have check-
ed your measurement adapter and any connecting lines for
damage.
• Do not use the measuring appliance in spaces or unsuitable sur-
rounding conditions in which flammable gases, vapours or dust
are or may be present. For your own safety, do not allow the
measuring appliance and/or measuring leads to become damp
or wet.
• When safe operation is obviously no longer possible, the appli-
ance must be taken out of use and secured from being acci-
dentally switched on. It can be assumed that safe operation is
no longer possible when:
- there is visible damage to the appliance,
- the appliance is no longer working and
- the appliance has been stored for an extended period in
unsuitable conditions or
- it has been exposed to adverse transport conditions.
• When working on vehicles, the following safety rules must
also be observed:
- Always wear eye protectors when working in the engine
4
compartment in order to protect your eyes against battery
acid, petrol, dust, airborne particles and any engine parts that
may become detached and fly off.
- When the engine is running, never touch rotating parts such
as the radiator fan, V-belts, pulleys, etc. If you have long hair,
always wear a hairnet. Never work on an engine which is
running while wearing loose-fitting clothing and/or a tie.
- Never place any tool on the battery (risk of short-circuit).
Avoid contact with battery acid. Sulphuric acid can attack
your clothes and seriously damage your skin and eyes. When
using an external battery, use a lead to connect its negative
terminal (in the case of vehicles where "-" is connected to
earth) to the bodywork of the vehicle to be repaired. In add-
ition, the battery must be placed at least 0.5 m (= 50 cm)
above the ground.
- Voltages up to 50,000 V can occur in the ignition system.
Therefore always use insulated test tongs when working on
the ignition system.

3. Description of Controls

See fold-out page for illustration
1. RPM adapter assembly
2. Switch for very high-voltage (approx. 50 kV) or less high-voltage
(approx. 30 kV) ignition systems
3. "Tong opening lever" used to open the clip-on adapter; the
attachment direction (spark plug direction) is shown on the
clip-on adapter.
4. Output of measurement adapter in the form of an insulated
measuring lead with two connectors ("+" = red and "-" =
black) for connection to the RPM AUX measurement input of
the GDM-705.
