4. General Configuration

The workstation and the device to be connected via the Ethernet-Interface have to
be located within the same network segment during the configuration procedure.
If this can not be guaranteed, the device has to be connected directly to the
worksation by using a cross-over patch-cable.
If there are installed more than one network interface cards in one computer, the
arp-command has to address the card which has to be used (arp /?).
If an already configured card is to be installed into another device, the card must be
reconfigured according to chapter 4 + 5 and/or 4 + 6.
Only use the PING command after the card has been programmed
which means after successful finishing of chapter 4.2. Before that the PING
command will not recognize the card!
4.1 Configure/change
1. Switch the device on.
2. Start the MS-DOS -window resp. the MS-DOS-prompt.
Use the "arp"-command to assign the IP-address fix.

Ask the competent network administrator for the IP-address and the Subnet Mask and
Gateway, which are needed later on.
The syntax of our example is:
The configuration of the different TCP/IP-modes and the interface parameters is done via the
network by using the program Telnet. This can normally be executed from each workstation
of the network using TCP/IP-protocol.

Within approx. 5 sec. this command will display an error message (that will be
correct, see next page). If it takes longer until the error message appears, an
input error in one of the previous commands has much likely be made.
In this case both of the previous steps must be repeated.
