Shortform guide
O
Subwoofers serve as a support and extension for audio systems in the bass and low bass range. Normally a
single ELAC SUB 101 ESP per Stereo- or Surround system will be sufficient. Almost any placement in the living
room will work, a position near a wall or in a corner -- not too close to the listening position -- is often
advantageous.
O
The ELAC SUB 101 ESP is universally equipped and will link directly with most audio systems. Please, make
the signal connections, first, and then finally put the mains plug into the socket.
O
Please, maintain a rear clearance of min 10cm for cable routing and sufficient cooling.
O
Since the subwoofer is mounted in the speaker's bottom, a minimum distance between woofer bottom and floor
must be maintained, which is why the ELAC SUB 101 ESP is supplied with the spikes already fixed.
O
If you want to place objects on the ELAC SUB 101 ESP, make sure they do not rattle or slip, e.g. by putting a
mat under a possible vase. Vehicle accessories provide special mats against skidding.
You may even place a main speaker on the ELAC SUB 101 ESP with a rubber or felt sheet in-between.
O
Signal connections are made at the back without special adapters either by speaker cable (as is usual with
passive speakers) or by shielded RCA type interconnects.
Please do not try to use both connection modes at the same time.
O
Usually the powered Subwoofer will be used simply as an add-on to existing main speakers.
If you use speaker cables (coming from a power amplifier), the main speakers may also be connected to the
terminals named "SPEAKER LEVEL OUT". This makes sense if the power handling of the main speakers has
to be improved for use at higher levels.
O
In each case there are two input channels (L and R). They are connected (added) within the ELAC SUB 101
ESP for further common processing. Stereo signals go to the corresponding marked terminals.
O
One-channel signals (Mono) are connected to the LINE-IN terminal marked "L." With loudspeaker mono signals,
please use the terminal pair markedn "SPEAKER LEVEL IN L."
If the maximum gain should be insufficient with this arrangement or the auto switching threshold is too high for
small signals, you have to place a short bridge to the respective other channel in order to get the same gain as
with two channels.
O
After finishing the signal and mains connections, turn on the mains switch. In the "OFF" position of the mode
switch, the LED on the back panel must give a faint red light. Now turn the mode switch to "AUTO" (automatic
turn-on through audio signal, turn-off delay ca 15 min) or "ON" (continuous operation). After turn-on, the LED
changes to green.
O
Upper cutoff frequency ("CROSSOVER FREQUENCY") and gain ("SUBWOOFER LEVEL") are adjusted on the
back panel. Recommended presets:
"CROSSOVER FREQUENCY" not too low for the start, at least 63 Hz, with small satellites and surround
systems rather 80 to 125 Hz.
O
The small sliding switch "POLARITY" on the back optimizes the summing of the frequency range jointly
reproduced by subwoofer and main speakers. The favorable polarity has to be found in a listening test at your
preferred listening location and under the given conditions regarding placement and system components.
In about 60% of the situations an inverted polarity ("-") will yield the more efficient addition in the crossover
range. Therefore you should use the "-" position as preset.
O
For a complete turn-off (disconnection from the mains), first of all, please bring the power mode switch into the
"OFF" position. About 1 sec after turning the device off you can pull the mains plug without turn off noises.
O
Please pay attention to the Safety Instructions
