1. General
The maximum communication range it depends mainly on the antenna type, the location of the antenna and the setup
of the antenna. The SWR-HF2000/HF5000 is a two-function test meter for SWR & Power. It indicates the condition of
the antenna and transmitter with an impedance of 50 Ohm. It is possible to measure the Standing Wave Ratio (SWR),
the relative output power of the transmitter and the reflected output power from the antenna. The test-instrument is
designed to be used for base stations or mobile operations. The meter SWR-HF-2000 is suitable for transceivers on
1.8 - 200 MHz such as CB radios on 27 MHz. The meter SWR-HF5000 is suitable for UHF / VHF transceiver on
140-525 MHz.
To radiate the maximum RF power produced of the transceiver by electro magnetic waves through the antenna and to
receive all signals, the antenna and antenna cable must be adjusted to the transceiver.
The adjustment means, that the transceiver, connector, antenna cable and antenna will have the same impedance at
50 Ohm. In case of mismatching adjustment the RF output power will be reflected to the transceiver. The reflection must
be kept as low as possible. A 100% adjustment is not possible. By using SWR-HF2000/HF5000 it is possible to control
the adjustment and to arrange new precise adjustment if necessary.
2. Feature & Controls
The SWR-HF2000 is equipped with an illuminated scale. The upper scale

scale it becomes necessary to connect the meter
power lead. Please pay attention about polarity RED = PLUS / BLACK = MINUS.

3. Preparing SWR- & Power Measurement
The SWR-HF2000 / HF5000 provides measurement of the standing wave ratio and RF power. For the measurement
an additional jumper coaxial cable of max. 60 cm is necessary for the connection between the meter and the transceiv-
er. The switched off radio shall be connected at the socket

of the meter marked "ANT". After measurement, the connection between
antenna and transceiver should be disconnected to prevent any disturbance of other radio devices.
4. Measuring of SWR and Power
After the meter has been firmly connected to the antenna and the radio the measurements can be started. However, at
first it is advisable to check the 0-setting of the scale. If necessary, it can be carefully re-adjusted by using a suitable

screw driver at the scale adjustment
.
4.1 Measuring of the transmitting power

Switch on the radio and set centre frequency.

Set the slide switch 'FUNCTION'
of the meter in position 'POWER'.

Set the slide switch 'POWER'

Set the slide switch 'RANGE'
of the meter in position of the maximum TX power
provided by the connected radio (for example CB radio with 4 Watts TX power set the
range at the meter on 5 Watts).

Now, the actual TX (RF) power is shown on the scale
to talk button of the radio.

For measurement of unmodulated TX power in SSB mode the key 'AVG / PEP MONI'
not pressed in position 'AVG'.
For measurement of modulated peak TX power in SSB mode the key 'AVG / PEP MONI'
must pressed in position 'PEP MONI'. While pressing the push to talk button of the radio
and talking into the microphone the modulated SSB TX power is shown on the scale of the meter.
4.2. Measurement of reflecting transmitting power
The measurement of the reflecting transmitting power is showing the reflected TX power and not the transmitting
power radiated. The good quality and alignment of the antenna will provide low TX power reflection. The measure-
ment of reflecting transmitting power will be arranged as follows:

While pressing the push to talk button of the radio the reflected TX power will be shown

4.3 Measurement of Standing Wave Ratio -SWR-
The standing wave radio -SWR- is the result of the effective voltage of the forwarded and reflected wave between the
radio and the antenna. The SWR between radio and antenna must be adjusted according to the instruction for the
antenna otherwise radio and antenna are mismatching. The best performance is SWR 1:1 without any reflection.
In case of mismatched adjustment there is a entire reflection and the SWR is at infinity. The measurement of SWR
will be arranged as follows:

Switch on the radio.

Set the slide switch 'FUNCTION'

While pressing push to talk button of the radio turn the 'CALIBRATION CONTROL'
clockwise until the needle reaches the position

While the radio remains on transmitting mode the slide switch "FUNCTION"
position CAL into position SWR. Now the SWR will be shown at the scale
