5.1. Brakes

To prevent any surprises while driving, please familiarize yourself which brake lever operates which
brake (front and rear). The left lever will operate the front brake, while the right lever will operate
the rear brake. It is important to never apply any grease or cleaning agents on braking pads or rotors
as it can cause noise while braking and diminish braking functionality.
Hydraulic Disc brakes
Disc brakes combine high braking power with a high level of control. The brake pads of the
hydraulic disc brakes can be adjusted by slightly loosening the hexbolts of the calliper mount.
Center the calliper while pulling the brake levers firmly. Tighten the screws firmly while braking.
Burn-in procedure
Disc brakes require a burn-in procedure. By not doing the burn-in procedure, you will not reach the
full stopping-potential of the brakes. Moreover, there is a chance that the brake pads can squeak
while braking. If you have problems with squeaking brakes, replace your brake-pads,
clean your disc appropriately and redo the burn-in procedure.
Burn-in requires a dry and clean environment. Accelerate to 20km/h and gradually brake
on 1 brake until standstill. Repeat 20 times for front and rear brake separately.
bell
We advise you to familiarise yourself gradually with the full stopping potential of your bike.
In that way you are preparing yourself for an eventual emergency stop without loosing
control of your bike.
bell
A full stop on a front- or rear-brake alone could potentially make you loose control of your
bike. Always make use of both brakes simultaneously. For very strong braking keep your
arms straight and your weight back to counteract potential tilting of the bike.
bell
Please beware, disc brakes become hot surfaces after heavy use. Do not try to touch the
disc brakes after or during a trip.
bell
Braking distances may increase in wet weather. Extra caution is advised.
