8 Operation
8.2 Description of the control functions
2-step, 4-step, spot, custom programmes (MC 3 – MC 5)
Tap the operating button (L) to switch between 2-step, 4-step, 2-step spot and possibly custom functions. The
activated function is indicated by the LEDs.
Material selection (material, gas, wire diameter) (MC 3 – MC 4)
On briefly tapping the material button, the material type (e.g. steel) appears on the left-hand display, the gas
(e.g. CO
material can now be selected by turning the left-hand incremental encoder. The last selection shown on the
display is adopted.
Automatic/manual mode (MC 3 – MC 4)
Press and hold the material button (for more than 1 second) to switch between automatic and manual mode.
In automatic mode, all the necessary parameters for welding are automatically set and maintained by the
control system. In manual mode, the wire feed speed in m/min can be set using the left-hand knob. In the
case of the MC 3 – MC 4 control systems, the power is set using the machine's voltage selector switches.
Power pre-selection / step preview / material thickness (MC 3 – MC 4)
When using the MC 3 – MC 4 control systems, the welding power can only be adjusted using the voltage
selector switch on the device. In automatic mode, the wire speed and throttle for an optimal welding result
are also always adjusted at the same time. There are two ways to find the optimum welding voltage step:
1. Via the material thickness. Press the mm (MC 3) or ► (MC 4) button until the mm LED (MC 3) illuminates
2. Via the welding voltage or welding current. Tap the mm (MC 3) or ► (MC 4) button until the welding
Fx functions (MC 3)
Briefly tap the Fx operating button to individually set the following functions for each welding curve (display
text indicated in brackets):
You can adjust the values within their ranges by turning the left-hand knob. If the value is not changed for
more than 2 seconds, the display switches to default and saves the value.
You can also exit the menu by pressing the wire feed button.

or the material thickness LED (MC 4) flashes. The required material thickness can now be set. This is
done by turning the left-hand knob on the MC 3 or pressing the ▲ ▼ buttons on the MC 4 until the
desired material thickness appears on the right-hand display. At the same time, the required welding
voltage step appears in the middle display. Example: Step 1–10 for 2.0 mm.
voltage in volts and welding current in amperes appear on the middle and right-hand displays.
The required value can now be set. This is done by turning the left-hand knob on the MC 3 or pressing
the ▲ ▼ buttons on the MC 4 until the desired value appears on the displays. Now, tap the mm (MC 3)
or ► (MC 4) button again as described under point 1 until the mm LED (MC 3) illuminates or the
material thickness LED (MC 4) flashes. The welding voltage step and material thickness are displayed.
This process can be repeated as often as required. The step shown is a good start value but may need
to be changed for the upcoming welding task.
• Start speed (StS): 10% to 100% of the welding speed
• Wire burn-back (bUb): −90 ms to +60 ms
• Gas pre-flow time (PrG): 0.0 to 1.0 seconds
• Gas post-flow time (PoG): 0.5 to 10 seconds
• Spot time (SPt): 0.5 to 10 seconds
• Throttle (Cho): not used for this machine type
• Code (CODE): for locking the control system (see next point)
