ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS
SAN MARTIN
HULL
PHOTO 1. Assemble the hull structure by following the numerical order of the drawing. Before gluing the frames in place make
sure that they are correctly fitted into position "abutting" up against the corresponding slots on the false keel. It is important that
the frames are completely perpendicular to the false keel. For this operation use white glue (carpenter's glue) as the adhesive.
PHOTO 2. Line the bulkhead of the frame, no. 4, using contact glue (cobbler's glue) as an adhesive. Carefully read the
manufacturer's instructions for use. Trim off any excess lining using a cutter, taking care not to place your fingers in the line of
the cut.
PHOTO 3. Line the bulkheads of the frames, nos. 8 and 9.
PHOTO 4. Before lining the deck, no. 15, use a pencil to mark a line that divides it lengthways into two equal parts. Start to line,
working from the centre outwards. Turn this part over and, resting on a flat surface, trim away the excess lining.
PHOTO 5. To simulate the planking effect and the caulking of the deck, using a pencil, highlight the lengthways lines that mark
out the edges of the strips of lining. Alternately mark out crossways lines every 60 mm. and pencil in dots next to the crossways
lines, to simulate nails.
PHOTO 6. Following the same procedure as in photos 4 and 5, line the deck no. 17.
PHOTO 7. Following the same procedure as in photos 4 and 5, line the deck no. 19.
PHOTO 8. Following the same procedure as in photos 4 and 5, line the deck no. 21.
PHOTO 9. Glue the lined decks onto the structure of the ship. It is important that the decks should be correctly adapted to the
top part of the frames. Use a quick-drying glue for this process. Dye (using walnut coloured water-based dye) the part of the
frame, no. 7, that sticks out above the level of the deck, nº 15.
PHOTO 10. Glue the reinforcing chocks, nos. 23 and 24, to the false keel. Use white glue as an adhesive.
PHOTO 11. Glue the reinforcing chocks, nos. 25 and 26, to the false keel.
PHOTO 12. Dye one of the sides of the bulwark, no. 27, the same colour as the frame, no. 7. Glue the bulwarks to the hull
structure, ensuring that they coincide with the slots in the frames. The dyed parts of the bulwarks must face towards the inside
of the ship.
PHOTO 13. Following the same process as for photo 12, glue the bulwarks, no. 28. Use quick-drying glue.
PHOTO 14. Fill in the gap that has been left at the stern, between the two bulwarks, no. 28, using a couple of the strips, no. 29.
Then glue the upper stern, no. 30, into place.
PHOTO 15. Glue the parts, nos. 31, 32, 33, 34 and 35, into place. The parts, nos. 36 and 37, must stick out approximately 1
mm. above the deck. For this stage of the assembly use quick-drying glue.
PHOTO 16. Carry out the same operation as in the previous photo with the parts, nos. 34, 36, 37 and 39.
PHOTO 17. Glue the parts, nos. 37, 38, 40 and 41, into place.
PHOTO 18. In order to achieve a good surface contact for the lining strakes, with the help of a sander, sand down the
reinforcing chocks and the edge of the frames, working from bow to stern.
PHOTO 19. Carry out the same operation as in the previous photo but this time at the stern of the ship, and sanding from stern
to bow.
PHOTO 20. Before starting to line the hull, immerse the lining strakes, nos. 42 and 43, in water for at least an hour, so that the
wood can recover its original elasticity. Starting from the central frames, glue and pin the master strake, no. 42, using the
frame slots as a guide.
Line the hull on both sides simultaneously, i.e. for each strake fitted to the left side fit its opposite number on the right side.
PHOTO 21. Glue and pin the lining strakes, no. 43, starting the process alongside the master strake, no. 42, and continuing
until you have completely covered the top part of the bulwarks. The strakes must come together at the bow, completely covering
the reinforcing chocks and the false keel.
PHOTO 22. Continue to line the hull, from the false keel up to the master strake. The strakes must be attached up to the edge
of the upper stern and the last frame of the structure. Using a cutter trim away the lining from the gun ports.
PHOTO 23. To finish off the lining of the hull make, to measure, a number of lengths of strake to fill in the gaps. These usually
come to a point at one end. To complete the lining of the stern make up a number of wedge shaped pieces.
PHOTO 24. At both the bow and the false keel, at the stern, a flat area with a thickness of 4 mm. must be left.
PHOTO 25. Having finished the lining process, sand down the whole of the hull and file down the heads of the pins using a file.
PHOTO 26. Using a flat file, work over the inside edge of the gun ports and paint them black.
PHOTO 27. Using a pencil mark out the different areas of the upper stern as they are shown in the image. Using contact glue as
an adhesive, line the upper stern. With a cutter, eliminate the excess lining and clear the openings in the upper stern.
PHOTO 28. Start to line the hull by gluing a strip of the lining, no. 45, above the master strake. Alternate the lining work between
one side of the hull and the other. For this process use contact glue. (Carefully read the manufacturer's instructions for use).
PHOTO 29. Continue to line the hull from the master strake upwards towards the bulwarks. Continue to line the hull, at the
same time, starting from the false keel upwards towards the master strake.
PHOTO 30. To finish off the lining of the hull make, to measure, a number of lengths to fill in the gaps. Complete the lining of the
stem by making up a number of made-to-measure wedge shaped pieces.
PHOTO 31. A 4 mm. thick flat area must be left at both the bow and on the false keel, in the stern area.
PHOTO 32. Taking the stern gallery, no. 59, make up the slots in the side of the hull from which to hang the gallery, but do not
glue it in place.
PHOTO 33. Having finished the lining work, sand down the whole of the hull using fine grain sandpaper. Check with Plan 2
before gluing the parts, nos. 46, 47, 48, 49, 50, 51 and 52, into place on the hull.
PHOTO 34. Line the part, no. 53, on one side with lining no. 54, and on the other with lining no. 55.
PHOTO 35. Dye (using a walnut coloured tint), one side of the bulwarks, no. 56. Line the other side of the bulwarks with the
lining, no. 57.
PHOTO 36. Using a file, make up the parts, no. 58, and glue them in place on the front edge of the waist bulwarks. Glue the
deck, no. 53, onto the stem rake fitted to the hull. Glue the bulwarks, no. 56, onto the deck, no. 53, and the newels, no. 58.
PHOTO 37. Line one side of the gallery, no. 59, using the lining, no. 60, and the other with the lining, no. 61. Use contact glue
for this process. Eliminate the excess lining using a cutter.
