Safety guideline for Ion Pumps

Ion pumps are commonly used to create ultra-high vacuum, thanks to their
cleanliness, ability to pump different gases, and maintenance- and vibration-free
operation.
Depending on the size, the pumps may be heavy and they must be handled by
means of suitable moving and handling tools. Installation in any position is in
principle possible, provided that the guidelines in the pump manual are respected
and the pump is correctly supported.
Since ion pumps are equipped with permanent magnets, it is recommended to do
not put any electronic device near these pumps, to avoid device malfunction due to
magnetic interference.
Ion pumps work thanks to the application of a high voltage. To avoid injury, never
connect the high voltage to the pump before it is installed into the system and all
the inlet flanges are properly connected or blanked off. Before carrying out any work
on the pump, disconnect it from the high voltage supply.
Ion pumps can be equipped with heaters. When heating elements are installed, do
not touch the pump during the heating and cooling phases, since the high
temperature may cause a serious damage.
To avoid damage to equipment and to prevent injuries to operating
WARNING
personnel the installation instructions as given in this manual should be
strictly followed!
