5.2

Earthing

To prevent hazards by static electricity, the rotating union is to be earthed to ground.
All required operations (e.g. earthing) are to be effected by trained personnel.
Caution: Do not install any insulated metallic pipe joints! This applies especially to pipes with a diam-
eter of > 3 cm.
5.3

Dry running protection

Q To avoid inadmissible temperatures due to dry operation of the axial face seal, the installation
of a differential pressure or flow monitoring system is required when using the rotating union
in zone 1 and/or 21 through which the rotating union is shut down in case of sudden pressure
drop.
Q The control device in zone 1 and/or zone 21 has to comply with the minimum requirements of
EN 13463-5:2011 for a minimum functional failure rate of IPL 1, SIL 1 (according to EN 61508)
or category 2 (according to EN 954-1).
Q When used in zone 2 and/or zone 22, the operator has to ensure that the flow and pressure is
present during normal operation.

Information on the Operation

6.1

Test run

A test run without medium (dry operation) is not admissible, as apart from a damage of the axial
face seal temperatures of more than 200 °C are to be expected in the area of the axial face seal!
In the scope of commissioning, a test run outside the hazardous area is to be effected. When perform-
ing this test run, check the following:
Q Smooth, vibration-free run of the rotating union.
Q Correct fitting of the siphon tube in the rotating union. The siphon tube must be installed in a
way that it moves freely in axial direction and is not jammed.
Q Development of noises and temperature at the rotating union.
Q Leakage at the hose connections and leakage hole.
Q Leakage at the seal.
Q Leakage line must be installed in 6 o'clock position.
Q Leakage holes that are not necessary are to be closed.
Q The dry running protection must be installed and activated.
Q Flow is to be ensured.
Q Any installed valve is to be protected against misuse, i.e. the media flow must not be inter-
rupted!
The rotating direction must not be tested by short start of the unfilled rotating union in order to
avoid potential temperature rises in case of contact of rotating and stationary parts.
6.2

Protection against dust deposits

The rotating union is to be protected against dust deposits.
