Misuse

This chapter provides information on known misuse of rotating unions of the 54, 55 and 57 series.
The rotating unions are not suitable for the areas and applications described herein. Use in such ar-
eas or for such applications constitutes a misuse endangering people and machines and is therefore
prohibited.
Prohibition for the following areas:
Q Food
Food, cleaning and disinfectant residues cannot be removed from the rotating unions. People
may suffer poisoning.
Prohibition for the following applications:
Q Conveying of combustible flow media or hydrocarbons
Combustible flow media or hydrocarbons may ignite or cause explosions.
Q Connection to a piping system with excessive pressure
If excessive pressure is applied to the rotating unions, supply pipes can come off and cause
personal injury or property damage.
Q Operation without lubrication
Dry operation (without flow medium) of the rotating union causes damage to the axial face
seals.
Q Connection to fixed pipes
In case of connection to fixed pipes, the rotating unions may leak and the ball bearing may be
damaged. Cracking of supply lines may occur as a consequence of vibratory fatigue.
Q Conveying of flow media which are too hot
If the temperature of the flow media exceeds the maximum admissible temperature of the ro-
tating union (see Table A), the requirements of temperature class T3 are no longer complied
with. The static seals (elastomer seals) may then be damaged, the rotating unions may become
leaky, and personnel injury or property damage may occur. Gases with ignition temperature
200 °C may ignite.
Q Operation of rotating union in zone 1 and/or 21 without dry running protection
(according to Chapter 5.3)
This list is not comprehensive and will be updated with results from product observation.

1.2.1 Residual hazards

The rotating unions and equipment parts such as the assembly flange and seal (axial face seal,
flat seal incl. piping) may be subject to pressure or high temperatures due to the liquids.
Q Potential residual hazards are to be established by the operator in the course of risk assess-
ment according to directive 1999/92/EC and to be eliminated by technical or organisational
measures if required.
Q Even if all required safety measures have been taken, there is a residual hazard due to leakages
or mechanical damages of the rotor. Vapours or liquids may escape from seals or screw con-
nections in an uncontrolled manner.
Q Take the respective preventive actions.
