2002 saw a major change in WGP. Big size 990cc 4-stroke motorcycles
were given the green light to race with SOOcc 2-stroke motorcycles in
the top-category of MotoGP class. Honda entered the 4-stroke RC211V
in this class in which harsh competition was expected. Honda's history
in WGP began in 1959 with a 125cc class race during Isle of Man TT ra-
ces. Honda dominated during the 1960's. In 1966 season Honda won
manufacturer titles in all 5 classes of the WGP. The "RC" in the name of
this motorcycle stands for Honda's designation of 4-stroke racer and
"211" means the first bike in the 21 st century. "V" designates the cylinder
layout of the engine and at the same time represents the roman charac-
ter for 5, which is the number of cylinders. After considering various en-

5 Klassen des WGP. "RC" im Namen dieses Motorrads steht als Honda's
Bezeichnung fur 4-Takt-Rennmaschinen und "21 1 " bedeutet das erste
Motorrad im 21. Jahrhundert. "V" schlieSlich zeigt die Zylinderanord-
nung des Motors und stellt gleichzeitig die Romische Ziffer fur 5 dar,

Honda a engage sa nouvelle RC21 1 V dans ce Championnat et une lutte fa-
rouche etait attendue. Les debuts de Honda dans le Championnat du Mon-
de remontent a 1959 en 125 cm

Honda remporta les litres mondiaux de toutes les categories. Le prefixe
"RC" du nom de ces motos designe chez Honda une machine de competi-
tion 4 temps. Le nombre "21 1 " signifie qu 'il s'agit de la premiere du 21 *™
Siecle. Le "V" indique I'architecture du moteur ainsi que le chiffre romain

gine types, Honda decided to develop the revolutionary V5 type to
prove their challenging spirit. This powerful and compact engine fea-
tures a 75.5-degree cylinder banking angle to reduce vibration. The
"Unit Pro-Link" suspension, the fuel tank placed below the seat, and the
avant-garde cowling form give an unique style to this bike. Heavy parts
are concentrated in the middle to create higher cornering performance
and handling. This impressive machine brought 11 victories and the
world champion title to V.Rossi, and a victory in the South African GP to
T.Ukawa. RC211V reigned supreme during the MotoGP class season
with 1 2 victories out of 1 6 races writing a new page in Honda's 4-stroke
racer history.

V5, um Mut fur neue Herausforderungen zu beweisen. Dieser leistungs-
starke und kompakte Motor weist einen 75.5 Grad V-Winkel auf, welcher
die Vibrationen verringert. Die "Unit Pro-Link" Aufhangung, der Kraftstoff-
tank unter dem Sitz und eine avantgardistische Form der Verkleidung
verleihen diesem Motorrad einen einzigartigen Stil im MotoGP. Schwere
Teile sind in der Mitte konzentriert, um die Kurvengangigkeit und das
Handling zu verbessern. Diese eindrucksvolle Maschine brachte V. Rossi
11 Siege und den Weltmeister-Titel ein, dazu einen Sieg beim GP von
Sudafrika fur T. Ukawa . Die RC211V beherrschte die erste Saison der
MotoGP-Klasse mit 1 2 Siege in 1 6 Rennen, womit sie eine neue Seite in
Honda's Geschichte der 4-Takt-Rennmaschinen aufschlug.

MotoGP avec 12 victoires sur 16 courses disputees, marquant d'une nou-
velle pierre blanche I'histoire des 4 temps de competition Honda.
