Application

− Zener barriers use measurement and control technology for processing low
voltages and currents. Zener barriers contain intrinsically safe circuits
which are used to operate intrinsically safe field devices (such as load
cells) in potentially explosive atmospheres.
− It is essential to comply with the legal requirements and guidelines for the
planned application or purpose.
− Devices that have been operated in general electrical equipment must not
then be used in electrical equipment connected to potentially explosive
atmospheres.
The equipment must be installed and put into service only by personnel
who have been specially trained for the purpose.
Installing the devices outside the Ex area (see also chap. 3.2)
− Zener barriers are constructed to degree of protection IP20 and must
therefore be protected to pollution degree 2 in the event of adverse ambient
conditions such as splashing water or pollution.
− The Zener barriers must be installed outside the potentially explosive
atmospheres.
− The intrinsically safe circuits in the devices (identified as light blue in the
devices) may, depending on the type of protection, be extended into
potentially explosive atmospheres. In this case it is essential to provide
safe and secure separation from all non-intrinsically safe circuits.
− When interconnecting intrinsically safe field devices (such as load cells)
with the intrinsically safe circuits of the associated Zener barriers, it is
important to observe the maximum explosion protection values required by
the field devices and the Zener barriers (proof of intrinsic safety).
The EN 60079−14 Standard must be complied with in this connection. In
the Federal Republic of Germany it is also necessary to comply with the
"National Preamble" to DIN EN 60079−14/VDE 0165 Part 1.
− It is also necessary to comply with the EC Certificate of Conformity or EC
Type Examination Certificate. Compliance with the "Special Conditions"
included in these certificates is particularly important.
− When using the intrinsically safe circuits in dust Ex-range "D", only field
devices (such as load cells) which are certified for this purpose may be
connected to them.
