It is an important rule that players must move their turtle every time they throw the dice, even if the only
possible move is sometimes back towards the island.
If the field which a player's turtle has to move to is already occupied by another turtle, the player has to
miss his turn.
End of the game
The winner is the player who succeeds in getting his turtle to the sea first.
Tip for older children
Before starting to play, children who already have more patience can define a specific number of rounds,
e.g. five. To play this way, write down all the players' names on a sheet of paper. The game proceeds as
above. A round ends when a turtle has reached the sea. The winning player gets a mark beside his name
on the list. The player with the most marks after five rounds has won.
The turtles can sometimes start from the sea and climb to the middle of the island for a change. With this
version, players can choose any starting-point they like at the edge of the sea.
Tips for kindergarten teachers and parents
The life of the turtle (Age: 4+):
This game presents a good opportunity to organise a project on "The life of the turtle" in
the kindergarten. For instance, make a wall newspaper. For this, cut out pictures from ma-
gazines of different types of turtles, their food and the places where they like to live (their
favourite habitats).
It would also be an opportunity to visit a maritime museum. There you can observe various
types of turtles and get to know them more closely.
If you have enough space, you could also set up a terrarium in the group room. In this way
the children could directly experience how turtles behave, how they grow and how they
produce babies. You can also draw up a weekly schedule, so that every child is responsib-
le at some point on a weekday for the care and feeding of the turtles. This strengthens
children's sense of responsibility and prepares them for looking after their own pets.
Turtle race (Age: 4+):
Would you like to have your own turtle race? Let's go! Choose two of the children and set
up a little "race track" or obstacle course in the group room, the corridor or the gym. But
you can't have turtles without shells – so each child has a cushion strapped to their back.
And now they set out along the track on all fours. The "turtle" who completes the course
first wins the race.
