casing is sufficient. In view of the low weight and high energy density, this type of battery
has quickly become established in model construction applications.
4. Lithium-ferrum batteries (LiFe) with 3.3 Volt nominal voltage - the latest generation of
lithium batteries, also known as A123. In view of the high discharge pulses and high
energy density, this type of battery will quickly enjoy widespread use in model construc-
tion applications.
DIFFERENT CAPACITY
When several cells are combined to form a battery pack and discharged with higher cur-
rent,
the cells heat up at different rates as heat dissipation from the inner cell is inhibited.
As a result, the internal resistance changes and the output capacity is lower. This cell then
discharges earlier and there is a risk that this cell may be discharged below the cut-off
voltage of 2.5 Volt.
Larger differences in capacity occur particularly at very low outside temperatures. When
LiPo batteries are used in an electric helicopter, for example, the front cell is cooled to a
greater extent by the airstream than the inner cells that are considerably warmer. As a
result, the cold cell has a lower capacity and there is a risk that the colder cell is discharged
below the cut-off voltage.
To avoid permanent damage to the cells, it is therefore recommended to discharge LiPo
cells only to a cut-off voltage of approx. 3 Volt. In addition, particular care must be taken
the next time the cells are charged to ensure that the cells are charged to the same level.
Charging individual cells connected in parallel poses no problem as, depending on the
voltage level, the total current is distributed over the individual cells.

Due to normal production tolerances and particularly temperature differences during
discharge - the outer cells are always better cooled than the inner cells - series-connected
lithium polymer cells drift apart. Inevitably, the cells have different voltage levels after seve-
ral cycles.
