to remove both pads, keep the SorbatexTM pad attached to the
plastic (Figure 9).
CHECKLIST
• Quick-Lock Buttons are in the locked position with Tamper Resistance
lock engaged.
• The front edge of the chin support is lined up with the front of the
patient's chin.
• The sides of the collar front are oriented up, off the trapezius, and
toward the ears.
• The collar is nicely snug on the patient's chin with the chin centered
comfortably in the Chin Support. The patient should not be able to
slip their chin inside the collar.
• Long hair is placed outside the collar.
• Tracheal opening and large posterior vent are midline.
• Collar sits away from the neck. There should be a "finger" gap
between the tracheal opening and the neck. If the collar is fit too
closely/tightly to the neck, loosen Fastening Straps slightly and size
up to the next taller size.
• No plastic touching the skin. The Sorbatex™ pads should extend
beyond all plastic edges.

GOOD TO KNOW

• To ensure proper collar sizing, it is recommended to note the collar
height setting in the patient's chart.
• For patients with thin necks, the length of the Fastening Straps may
be trimmed (Figure 10).
• The Sternal Pad can be removed if the patient's anatomy dictates, for
comfort in a supine position and/or during meals to ease chewing
and swallowing (Figure 9). Make sure not to remove both pads. Keep
the Sorbatex™ pad attached to the plastic.
• Remove pillows from behind the patient's head if pressure or redness
occurs on the chin.
• The MJA is designed to fit neck circumferences up to 22 inches
(56 cm). Note that the original Miami J collar is available in a Bariatric
size which fits up to 26 inches (66 cm).
COLLAR REMOVAL AND SKIN CARE
Cervical spine immobilization should not be compromised for skin/
wound care. To maintain the patient's head, neck and airway in proper
alignment, two persons are required when assessing and cleaning the
skin, and changing/cleaning the collar. These instructions do not
supercede established hospital protocols.
1. Before removing the collar, note where the ends of the Fastening
Straps are. When the collar is replaced, the straps should be in the
same position. You may use a pen to mark the strap positions on the
front of the collar (Figure 11).
2. Patient should be in supine position with bed flat. Remove any
pillows from behind the patient's head.
3. Position patient with arms to the side, shoulders down and head
aligned centrally. Keep head in a neutral position.
4. Open one of the Fastening Straps and hinge the collar open
(Figure 12). Wash the neck and collar with mild facial soap and water
and dry completely. Replace the soiled pads with clean, dry
replacements. Observe for any redness, irritation or debris under the
collar, especially over bony areas like the chin or clavicle.
