5. Replace the collar by securely reattaching the Fastening Strap in the
original location (Figure 8).
6. With physician approval only: Gently roll the patient onto their side.
Place a folded towl or small pillow under the cheek to prevent head
from tilting sideways.
7. Open the exposed Fastening Strap (Figure 13) and wash the back of
the neck and collar with mild facial soap and water and dry
completely. Replace the soiled pads with clean, dry replacements.
Observe for any redness, irritation or debris, especially over bony
areas like the occiput.
8. Replace the collar by securely reattaching the Fastening Strap in the
original location and gently roll the patient back to the supine position.
9. If unable to log-roll, the back of the collar can be removed and
reapplied by sliding it under the neck.
For patients with a tracheotomy tube:
10. Make sure to note the Fastening Strap location and the collar height
and document. The collar can be removed without detatching the
tracheotomy tube by first loosening the Fastening Straps and
unlocking the Quick-Lock Buttons. Then slide the Adjustable Sternal
Extension down and off the front (Figure 14).
Caution: Removal of the Adjustable Sternal Extension is to be done only
during application and removal of the collar. Always follow cervical spine
precautions when the Adjustable Sternal Extension is adjusted or
removed.
No powder or lotion is to be applied to the skin under the collar. For
additional instructions on proper care and cleaning the collar, please consult
the Patient's Instructions.
