About This Product

Performance specifications
A locking unit with pneumatic cylinders (according to ISO 15552) is a component that
can fix a piston rod (or comparable clamping rod) when compressed-air pressure is
applied or with spring force. Depending on the product version, the piston rod is
released with compressed air or screws.
Product description
The locking unit comprises the following components:
W Aluminum housing
W Cam with coupling lever
W Piston
Depending on the product version, you can move the piston by applying pressure or
with spring force (see the following illustrations).
The piston's axial movement forces the coupling lever to deflect. The coupling lever
is securely connected to the cam and turns it through a certain angle. The eccentric
movement forces the piston rod onto two sliding bearings thus holding the piston rod
in position.
The piston rod is free to move again as soon as you move the piston back and cancel
the cam function

Assembly
Assembling the product
Danger of injury due to moving system parts and suspended useful loads!
Danger of injury when assembly work is carried out on the system while it is
running.
O Bring the system mode into a state in which working movements are no longer
possible. Wait until all moving machine parts come to a standstill, and protect
the system against being switched on.
O Guide the useful loads into a safe position or remove them from the system.
O You may only then switch off the pressure in the relevant section of the
system.
O Generally avoid storing compressed air.
O Remove all other sources of danger in the immediate work area that may
result from stored energy in the system.
Risk of injury caused by insufficient holding function
Insufficient holding force can be caused by using rods not intended for use with
this product. This can result in system parts moving uncontrollably, injuring
persons, and damaging other system parts.
O Only use rods from our delivery (Ø 12, 16, 20 and 25 with tolerance range f9).
O Never use hardened or chrome-plated rods.
Jamming of the piston or the piston rod!
If the locking unit is subjected to mechanical tension or bent, the piston or piston
rod may jam.
O Ensure the locking unit is assembled without distortion.
Mount the locking units to AVENTICS pneumatic cylinders with the mounting
flange. Flange mounting is shown in the diagrams in

Fixing the LU1e locking unit
3
1. Fully expand the spring by turning the adjustment screw (1) to the right
(in direction –).
2. Push the locking unit onto the piston rod.
3. Release the residual clamping force by applying the release (2) pilot connection,
e. g. with a blow-out gun (P
e min
4. Mount the locking unit using the mounting flange or another suitable holder,
ensuring a smooth rotational movement.
Adjusting the play in the groove of the torsion protection
The degree of play in the torsion protection groove determines the rotation of the unit
on the piston rod. A tilted mounting flange or overdetermined support can result in
damage.
Adjusting the clamping force for the LU1e locking unit
3
Always loosen the counter nut before adjusting the clamping force.
1. Apply reduced pressure to the release (2) pilot connection. The reduced pressure
is calculated as follows: control pressure minus 1 bar.
2. Loosen the counter nut.
3. Use an Allen wrench to turn the adjustment screw (1) to the left (in direction +)
until the locking unit starts to clamp onto the piston rod. When the flange
mounting is released, the locking unit must still be displaceable in the axial
direction with noticeable resistance.
4. Increase the control pressure by 1 bar.
The locking unit must be free to move along the piston rod. If this is not the case,
e.g. because you have turned the adjustment screw (1) too far to the left or the
difference between the control pressure and the reduced pressure is less than 1
bar, you have to repeat the setting.
5. Once you have successfully set the pressure, tighten the counter nut.
Once the clamping force is set correctly, you can release or clamp the piston rod
guided by the locking unit by applying pressure to or exhausting the release (2) pilot
connection.
Fixing the LU1 locking unit
4
1. Release the locking unit by applying pressure at P
connection (2).
2. Push the locking unit onto the piston rod.
3. Mount the locking unit using the mounting flange or another suitable holder,
ensuring a smooth radial movement.
A tilted mounting flange or overdetermined support can result in damage.
Fixing the LU2 locking unit
5
1. Briefly apply compressed air at P
(blow-out gun sufficient).
2. Push the locking unit onto the piston rod.
3. Mount the locking unit using the mounting flange or another suitable holder,
ensuring a smooth radial movement.
A tilted mounting flange or overdetermined support can result in damage.
Adjusting the clamping force for the LU2e locking unit
5
It is not necessary to adjust the clamping force. You can release or clamp the rod
guided by the locking unit by applying compressed air at P
(1) and release (2) pilot connections alternately.
Connecting the locking unit pneumatics
You can find control examples for a safe actuation of locking units and cylinders in
the appendix in section „Control examples" on page 1.
