Taking measurements
5.1

Resistance measurements

It is possible to directly determine the moisture content of the material in
percent by taking resistance measurements using the needles at the bottom
of the HBF 410:

This measurement is particularly suitable for assessing wood materials into
which the needles can easily be inserted.
After you have turned on the HBF 410, selected the appropriate material code
and performed a zero point calibration, insert the measurement needles into
the material to a depth of approx. 6 mm, if this is possible using a moderate
amount of force. Under no circumstances should the measurement needles
be hammered in by force, as this can cause damage to the moisture meter.
Measurements taken of wood are to be performed diagonally to the direction
of the fibres; in other words, a line drawn between the measurement needles
would dissect the fibre of the wood.
In order to assess the level of moisture, measurements should fundamentally
be taken at a number of points and the mean value, weighted if necessary,
determined.
Amongst other factors, the following should be observed:
• Depending on the type of wood, higher degrees of inaccuracy should be
expected when wood moisture levels are above approx. 30 – 35 %.
• The wood to be measured should not be frozen.
• High static charges in the material to be measured can lead to erroneous
measurements and possibly damage the moisture meter. Suitable earthing
arrangements can resolve the matter.

Dielectric measurements
Non-destructive measurements taken using the dielectric probe at the top
of the HBF 410 are informative measurements for orientation purposes; the
displayed values do not represent exact measurement results.
The measurements are ideal for detecting critically moist points in building
materials or for creating a moisture profile. Due to the fast functioning mea-
surement value display, it is possible to take measurements with the dielec-
