The Shortwave Retro Style Radio
This nostalgic shortwave radio is a single-circuit receiver with adjustable acoustic feedback. The
reception principle is the same as the Audion tubes from the early days of radio technology. Just 80
years ago, there was a similar radio in many living rooms. Further, the Audion was also used by radio
amateurs, for military telecommunications as well as by ship radios.
An Audion is a so-called straight receiver, which does not need an intermediate frequency, unlike the
later commonly used Superhet. The adjustable feedback is the secret of this receiver. In addition to
channel selection and volume, there is a third control, which is quite something. By adjusting the
feedback accurately, amplification and definition can be changed to obtain the best reception in
every situation. The receiver, therefore, is not easy to use, but it often reaches the reception power of
modern world receivers and can sometimes even exceed them. And it requires very little energy.
With a current consumption of about 5 mA (at low volume), an alkaline block battery (9 V) can last for
up to 100 hours.
In the past, it was necessary to connect a long wire antenna to the radio for the best reception. At the
end of the day, the radio announcer was heard to say: „Please, do not forget to earth your antenna!"
This was an important safeguard against lightning strikes. This radio is supplied with a short antenna
of half a meter and thus has good distance reception even inside the room. However, if an external
antenna is available, it can be connected to the dedicated antenna input.
