OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
IR-280-4ET INFRARED THERMOMETER
ITEM NO.: 10 09 61
INTENDED USE
This product combines non-contact temperature measurements with insertion probe
measurements to measure core temperatures. It is designed for temperature control in the
food industry according to HACCP. On its infrared side, the product measures the surface
temperature. With the insertion probe, it also measures the core temperature of food and
drinks. Moreover, the product features LED indicators for HACCP temperature limits and a
countdown timer. Power is supplied via a 9 V block battery.
For safety and approval purposes (CE), you must not rebuild and/or modify this product. If you
use the product for purposes other than those described above, the product may be damaged.
In addition, improper use can cause hazards such as short circuiting, fire, electric shock etc.
Read the instructions carefully and keep them. Make this product available to third parties only
together with its operating instructions.

SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS
Read the operating instructions carefully and especially observe the safety
information. If you do not follow the safety instructions and information
on proper handling in this manual, we assume no liability for any resulting
personal injury or damage to property. Such cases will invalidate the warranty/
guarantee.
a) Persons / Product
• The device is not a toy. Keep it out of the reach of children and pets.
• Do not leave packaging material lying around carelessly. These may become
dangerous playing material for children.
• Protect the product from extreme temperatures, direct sunlight, strong jolts, high
humidity, moisture, flammable gases, vapours and solvents.
• Do not place the product under any mechanical stress.
• If it is no longer possible to operate the product safely, take it out of operation and
protect it from any accidental use. Safe operation can no longer be guaranteed if
the product:
- is visibly damaged,
- is no longer working properly,
- has been stored for extended periods in poor ambient conditions or
- has been subjected to any serious transport-related stresses.
• Please handle the product carefully. Jolts, impacts or a fall even from a low height
can damage the product.
• The manufacturer or supplier accepts no responsibility whatsoever for incorrect
displays or the consequences which can arise from such incorrect displays.
b) (Rechargeable) batteries
• Correct polarity must be observed while inserting the (rechargeable) batteries.
• (Rechargeable) batteries should be removed from the device if it is not used
for a long period of time to avoid damage through leaking. Leaking or damaged
(rechargeable) batteries might cause acid burns when in contact with skin, therefore
use suitable protective gloves to handle corrupted (rechargeable) batteries.
• (Rechargeable) batteries must be kept out of reach of children. Do not leave
(rechargeable) batteries lying around, as there is risk, that children or pets swallow
them.
• All (rechargeable) batteries should be replaced at the same time. Mixing old and
new (rechargeable) batteries in the device can lead to (rechargeable) battery
leakage and device damage.
• (Rechargeable) batteries must not be dismantled, short-circuited or thrown into fire.
Never recharge non-rechargeable batteries. There is a risk of explosion.
c) Miscellaneous
• Consult an expert when in doubt about operation, safety or connection of the
device.
• Maintenance, modifications and repairs are to be performed exclusively by an
expert or at a qualified shop.
If you are not sure about the correct connection or use, or if questions arise which are not
covered by these operating instructions, please do not hesitate to contact our technical support
or another qualified specialist.

INSERTING / REPLACING THE BATTERY
1. Wait until the device turns off automatically after 20 seconds.
2. Using a suitable Phillips screwdriver, unscrew the fastening screws at the back of the
housing.
3. Remove the battery compartment cover.
4. Connect a 9 V block battery to the matching terminal inside the battery compartment. The
9 V block battery is designed so that it can only be connected in one position to prevent
incorrect polarity. Do not use force when inserting the battery.
5. Close the battery compartment by tightening the fastening screws.
Replace the battery when the battery icon appears on the top right side of the display.
INITIAL OPERATION
1. The product can be turned on with any key. The function last set and the temperature reading
last measured will appear on the display.
The device will turn off automatically after approx. 20 seconds of inactivity.
2. Using the MODE key, select the infrared temperature measurement, insertion probe
measurement or the timer function.
MEASURING TEMPERATURE
a) Infrared temperature measurement
1. Select the infrared temperature measurement by using the MODE key.
2. Press the SET key to switch between the temperature units Celsius and Fahrenheit.
3. Point the IR sensor as vertically to the measuring surface as possible to achieve the best
measuring results.
4. Press and hold the MEAS key to measure the temperature. The word "SCAN" appears on
the display. When you release the MEAS key, the readings last shown on the display will be
frozen. The word "HOLD" appears on the display.
5. The measured temperature will be shown in the top area of the display. In the lower display
area, the maximum measurement value (MAX) will be shown.
b) Insertion probe measurement
1. Press and hold the black release button (open lock icon) and flip the insertion probe
downwards. Ensure the insertion probe is fully folded out and clicks into place.
2. Select insertion probe measurement by using the MODE key. On the right-hand side of the
display the insertion probe icon will appear.
3. Press the SET key to switch between the temperature units Celsius and Fahrenheit.
4. Insert and/or hold the insertion probe into/in the medium to be measured (max. 4 cm).
5. Press and hold the MEAS key to measure the temperature. The word "SCAN" appears on
the display.
6. When you release the MEAS key, the readings last shown on the display will be frozen. The
word "HOLD" appears on the display.
7. Remove the insertion probe from the medium when the measurement is completed.
8. Carefully clean the insertion probe after each use!
9. Fold the insertion probe back up while pressing and holding the black release button.
If the measured temperature is lower than -40 ºC, "----" is shown on the display.
c) HACCP temperature limit display
To the left of the display, there are three LED indicators:
• When the top green LED (60 ºC / 140 ºF) flashes, there is no or low risk of bacteria in
foodstuffs.
• If the middle red LED (4 to 60 ºC / 40 to 140 ºF) flashes, there is a serious risk of bacteria.
• If the lower green LED (4 ºC / 40 ºF) flashes, there is no or low risk of bacteria in foodstuffs.
