Safety instructions
The following international electrical symbols
appear on the unit:
Attention! Follow the instructions!
Conductive double or reinforced insulation
(Protection class II)
-
This unit has been built and tested according
to VDE specifications and has left the factory
in a technically safe condition. To maintain
this condition and to ensure safe operation
the user must follow all instructions and
warnings contained in this operating manual.
-
The unit is intended for uses according to
IEC 664 Category II. It is suitable for using in
circuits up to 230 V.
-
During testing hold the unit by insulated
handles
and
only, do not touch the test
electrodes !
-
Use the unit in dry conditions only!
-
Please note, any work carried out on con-
ductive parts and instruments are inherently
dangerous. Voltages from 30 V AC and
60 V DC can be life-threatening to a person.
-
Always check for faults before each use.
-
Absolutely avoid getting the unit damp or wet.
-
Avoid any dew on the unit (condensation).
This occurs when the unit is transferred from
a cold environment into a warm one. This
reduces the strength of insulation inside the
unit and could lead to insulation faults. If this
arises store the unit at a high temperature in
an appropriate place for approx. 1 hour.
-
Always observe the maximum permissable
switch-on period!
-
If you suspect that safe operation is no longer
possible, then the unit must be switched off
immediately and secured against any future
unintentional use.
-
Safety during use of the unit can no longer
be guaranteed if:
-
the unit presents visible damage
-
the unit no longer functions
-
after prolonged storage in unfavorable
conditions
-
after severe transport stresses

Mode of operation of meter startup tester
The meter startup tester Z-TESTER is a handheld
twin-pole tester.
It consists of a housing handle
and probe
handle
with test electrodes .
The following display features and switches are
found on the housing handle (see representative
drawing):
-
signal lamp (red LED) for voltage display of
230 V .
-
signal lamp (red LED) for voltage display of
400 V (overload) .
-
signal lamp (green LED) for meter startup
test .
-
Turn-on switch which doubles as a selection
switch between 50 W and 100 W for meter
startup test  with the OFF-position of the
switch in the centre.
The meter startup tester Z-TESTER is designed
for short periods of operation. An internal fan
ensures the cooling of resistors under load.
This fan is activated during the load test (meter
startup test) only. If an overload or overheating
of the unit occurs, a built-in temperature sensor
automatically switches the unit off. A green LED
signal lamp lights up when the meter startup test
is operating . Automatic switch-off by the tem-
perature sensor also turns this LED off and stops
the fan.
3.
Operating check of the low voltage
meters
The meter startup tester Z-TESTER is designed
to check the correct operation of low voltage
meters.
After the calibrated low voltage meter has been
installed, the following parameters must be
checked on site:
-
startup ability for a load of 50 W or 100 W
(depending on meter type)
-
check if the current input and output connec-
tions are correct and not reversed by mis-
take.
-
phase voltage test
The meter startup tester Z-TESTER features all
relevant properties for checking that the above
requirements are fulfilled.
For operation checks on meters the following
loads apply:
Mains AC meters:
50 W
3-phase mains meters 10/ 60:
50 W
3-phase mians meters 20/ 100:
100 W
A few seconds only are sufficient for each phase
when testing a meter's startup ability. The test
should be as short as possible.
-
place the test electrodes  of the test
handles
and
against the relevant points
of meter under test. For the 3-phase mains
meter test each phase against an earthed
neutral.
-
Turn unit on with selection switch  and
watch tester display for startup movements!
