THE PROTOTYPE
This compact and powerful loco-
motive was built by the Krupp
Locomotive Works in 1939 as a
prototype for a standardized nar-
row gauge locomotive. It used
superheated steam to pull trains
weighing up to 80 metric tons (88
U.S. tons) up a 3% grade. Howe-
ver, World War II intervened, and
no further locomotives were built
to this design.
The loco went to the Nordhausen-
Wernigeroder Eisenbahn (NWE),
a meter-gauge line that linked the
towns in the deep valleys and pic-
turesque mountains of the Harz
region. After 1949, the NWE was
incorporated into the Deutsche
Reichsbahn (DR), and the loco
became DR 996001. Today, the
loco still operates in the Harz on
the Selketalbahn line.
