Tips for parents
Rondo Vario is a game which grows with your child, and provides long-lasting interest. For instance,
to begin with your child can simply sort the beads by colour. Then you can use Rondo Vario as a
threading game – simply let your child thread the beads to make a cater-pillar, just as he or she
fancies. Then extend the game by introducing the dice: only the shape-and-colour combinations
that are thrown can be threaded. For older children, we recommend introducing the variant with
the element of speed, which is a fun game for the whole family.
Tips for kindergarten teachers
Feeling without looking (Age: 4+)
Hide the geometric shapes under a cloth. For this version of the game, only the symbol
dice is required. The first child throws the dice and tries to identify the right shape by
touch, without looking under the cloth. If the right shape has been identified, it is allowed
to be threaded onto the caterpillar. If the shape is wrong, it is replaced under the cloth and
it is the next child's turn.
Caterpillar Relay (Age: 5+)
You can use "Rondo Vario" in physical education or outside in the open air. Make up 2-4
teams, give each team a caterpillar and position them at a suitable distance from the
geometric shapes, depending on the children's age. As the game leader, you throw both
dice. Now one child from each team is allowed to run towards the geometric shapes. The
first child to find the right shape in the colour that has been thrown is allowed to thread it
onto the "caterpillar" of his or her team. If the wrong shape was selected, the team has to
remove one already-threaded shape and give it back. Please note: in some colours shapes
are duplicated, so the game can get quite exciting. If a Smiley is thrown on the symbol dice,
players can take any shape in the colour that has been thrown on the colour dice. In this
case every team gets a shape, provided there are enough geometric shapes in that colour.
The first team to thread 6 geometric shapes has won the game.
Geometric shapes (Age: 4+)
Pick up the geometric shapes from the game and introduce them to the children one by
one. Begin with the basic shapes – circle, triangle, square. It is also a good idea to draw the
shapes shown on the dice on large sheets of paper, and to find objects in the group room
which have the same shape. In this way the children will be able to relate the abstract
shape (on paper) directly with both the three-dimensional bead and the object, thus laying
the foundations for a first basic understanding of geometry.
Making caterpillars (Age: 4+)
Together with the children, make a large caterpillar for the group room. For this you will
need a good selection of brightly-coloured card, from which you cut circles about 15 cm
in diameter. Stick these together to form the body of a funny, multi-coloured caterpillar. A
slightly bigger circle needs to be cut out for the head, and given a friendly face. The circles
in the body provide ample room for a photo of each child. This makes a great wall decora-
tion and also shows your whole group together at a glance.
