Special instructions for rinsing tap water pipes
According to DIN 1988-2 / EN 806-4 all newly installed tap water pipes must be rinsed before
first use and the results of this rinse are improved by a mixture of water and pulsating air.
This rinse compressor must be designed with an internal diameter of 2" for pipe cleaning.
For decontaminating systems contaminated with legionella, cleaning with a pulsating air/water
mixture is recommended before the disinfection.
Before connecting the tap water system, make sure that the rinse compressor and all accessory
components (such as hoses, pressure regulators, etc.) are completely sanitary.
The following points must always be observed when rinsing according to DIN 1988 Part 2:
1. The construction manager or the designer should be present during rinsing. After rinsing is
complete, an appropriate rinsing log should be made out.
2. The tap water used for rinsing must be filtered (according to DIN 1988 / DIN 50930).
3. The rinse water must maintain a minimum flow speed of 0.5 m/s in the largest pipe. To
reach this flow speed, a minimum number of DN 15 tapping points must be opened (see
chart). If the volume flow (the required flow speed) is not reached, the speed must be ad-
justed using a reservoir and a pump.
Minimum volume flow and minimum number of tapping points to be opened for rinsing at a min-
imum flow speed of 0.5 m/s.
Max. nominal diameter of distribution pipe DN
Min. volume flow with full distribution pipes Q at l/min
Min. no. of taps DN 15 to be opened
4. Cold and hot water pipes must be rinsed separately. Pipe systems are rinsed in sections. As
a rule, each rising pipe is considered a rinsing section. The line length per rinsing section
should not exceed 100 m. Begin with the rising pipe that is closest to the rinse compressor.
If an individual rising line is too small to guarantee the minimum volume flow in the distribu-
tion pipe, several lines must be combined into one rinsing section.
5. In each rinsing section, the tapping points are opened level by level, from bottom to top. For
each level, the tapping point that is the farthest from the rising pipe is opened first. Then
open all the others in the same sequence, from bottom to top, and from the farthest from the
rising line to the nearest.
6. The rinsing time per metre of running pipe must not exceed 15 seconds. Furthermore, each
tapping point must be rinsed for 2 minutes. Once the last tapping point opened has reached
the required rinsing time, close the tapping points in the opposite sequence from which they
were opened.
7. After the rinse, the water supply and the rinse compressor must be turned off. Then discon-
nect the device from the power supply. Attention! The rinse compressor must not be in the
process of filling the container. The rinse compressor must be disconnected from the rinsed
pipe. Then a new leak test is necessary. The final pipe installation must be completed pro-
fessionally.
8. After the rinsing process, a rinsing log (certificate) must be made out. The original copy must
remain with the customer and the carbon copy with the company performing the work.
