DesignMax and FreeSpace Surface-mount Loudspeakers
DM2S, DM3SE, DM5SE, DM6SE, DM8S, DM8SE, DM10S-SUB, FS2SE, and FS4SE
1.
Remove the grille from the loudspeaker (if it is already
attached).
DesignMax: Turn the loudspeaker so its bracket
slots are facing you, and find the two small
openings where the grille meets the enclosure.
Insert a small, flat tool into those openings to
disengage the release tabs, and then pull the grille
away from the loudspeaker.
FreeSpace: Disengage the grille lock by inserting a
small tool through the grille perforation (no larger
than 1.5 millimeters in diameter). While depressing
the grille lock, slide the grille away from the
loudspeaker to detach it.
2.
Remove the logo from the grille.
DesignMax: Pinch the fastener on the inside of the
grille and pull the logo away from the grille.
FreeSpace: Carefully peel the logo off the grille.
3.
DesignMax: Remove the scrim (grille cloth) from the
grille.
Note: Not removing the scrim will negatively affect the
loudspeaker appearance and acoustic performance.
A. Use a flathead screwdriver or similar object to peel
up a small section of the scrim.
B. Grab the scrim with your fingers and pull it back
slowly to remove it in one piece.
Note: The DM3SE, DM5SE, DM6SE, and DM8SE
models have foam strips on the edges of the scrim
to improve acoustic performance. Remove these
when you remove the scrim.
4.
Use a dry cloth to clean all surfaces that you want to
paint.
5.
Paint the grille:
DM2S, DM8S, DM10S-SUB, FS2SE, and FS4SE:
Powder-coated steel
FS2SE & FS4SE Aluminum Grille accessories:
Powder-coated aluminum
DM3SE, DM5SE, DM6SE, and DM8SE: Powder-
coated aluminum
Note: Do not over-apply paint to the grille. Excess paint
will negatively affect the acoustic performance.
6.
Mask the loudspeaker labels, connectors and other
components.
FreeSpace: If painting screw heads, mask threads.
WARNING: On DesignMax models, do NOT paint the
ends of the mounting bracket that are concealed by
the loudspeaker. If you need to paint the bracket, paint
only the part of the bracket that is visible while it is
attached to the loudspeaker (the gray-shaded area
shown here).
7.
Paint the enclosure:
All models except DM10S-SUB: Plastic (PC-ABS)
DM10S-SUB: Plastic-coated particle board
8.
After the paint is dry, remove all masking.
9.
Reattach the scrim to the grille, if desired. To determine
if you need to reattach the scrim, check if any
components (woofer, labels, screws, magnets, etc.) are
visible when the painted grille is placed over them.
Note: For DM3SE, DM5SE, DM6SE, and DM8SE
models, we recommend reattaching the foam strips
(mentioned in Step 3B) to the edges of the grille even if
you do not reattach the scrim. You can add adhesive to
these foam strips if needed.
Note: If needed, you can apply adhesive directly to the
grille to help keep the scrim in place and prevent it
from moving during loudspeaker performance.
10. Reattach the unpainted logo to the grille, if desired.
