Procedure for Timing the Injection Pump at TDC or before
TDC
Note : Depending on the type of injection pump and the timing specified by the manufacturer, proceed as follows:
Timing the Pump at TDC
Application for pumps with end access to plugs
Special applications : plug on the cylinder head.
Application for pumps with top access to plugs
3-1
Timing the Injection Pump at TDC
(pumps with end access)
• Fit tools as per 2-12. • Tip the pump toward the outside of the
engine. • Turn the crankshaft to position the engine at TDC, set the
gap, or for special applications, see 3-1-1. Starting at the gap setting

pump)
Rotate the crankshaft in the CW direction to position the engine at
TDC, set the gap or for special applications see 3-1-1. • Gently tip
the pump until the dial indicator displays the timing value
load value recorded above)
Remove the TDC gap setting tool. • Check.
3-1-1
Special Applications
Gap setting with engine at TDC can be replaced by determining the
exact TDC with the dial indicator. • Fit tools as per 2.10. • Rotate
the crankshaft until the dial indicator indicates TDC. • Reset the dial
indicator to 0
(record the pre-load value)
position.
Checking (3-1, 3-2, 3-3)
• Rotate the crankshaft 45° in the CCW direction and then rotate in the CW direction to position the engine according to 3-3, until
the dial indicator on the cylinder head indicates the prescribed value before TDC, or according to 3-1,
• In this position, the dial indicator should indicate the timing value. • If necessary, repeat the timing procedure..
Timing the Pump before TDC
Application for pumps with end access to plugs
And timing plugs on the cylinder head for engine positioning.
3-3
Engine Positioning before TDC • Fit tools as per 2.10. • Rotate the crankshaft until the dial indicator indicates TDC. •
Reset the dial indicator to 0
the dial indicator indicates the value specified before TDC.
Timing the pump before TDC • Carry out the timing steps in
crankshaft in the CW direction until the dial indicator on the cylinder head indicates the prescribed value before TDC
.
load recorded in 3-3)
Special Cases for Timing Distribution and Injection Pump.
Applications: Opel 16D, 16DA and 17D engines, Bosch pumps
3-4
Distribution Timing • Position the engine at TDC. • Unscrew the camshaft gear screw. • Install the measurement rod as
per 2-9. • Place the mobile support at the front. • Turn the crankshaft in the CCW direction until it is blocked. • Reset the dial
indicator to 0 • Move the mobile support back while watching the dial indicator needle
camshaft in the CW direction to return the dial indicator to 0
timing value is indicated on the dial indicator. • Fit the timing tool as per 2-7. • Tighten the camshaft gear. • Remove the timing
tool.
Timing the Injection Pump
• Position the engine at TDC. • Fit tools as per 2.12. • Rotate the crankshaft 90° in the CCW direction. • Reset the dial indicator
to 0. • Rotate the crankshaft in the CW to TDC • In this position, the dial indicator should indicate the timing value. • If the value
does not correspond to the timing, proceed as follows: • Unscrew the injection pump attachment screws. • Turn the gear until the
timing value is displayed on the dial indicator. • Tighten the gear attachment screw. • Check the timing.
Checking
• Rotate the crankshaft two turns in the CW direction until TDC is reached and then rotate back 90° in the CCW direction, check
that the dial indicator indicates 0. • Rotate the crankshaft in the CW direction until the dial indicator indicates the timing value. • If
necessary, repeat timing operations.
