2 Preparation and assembly
Note : Always refer to the distributor or injection pump supplier manual to determine the appropriate preparation before attempting
to adjust either.
* Whenever work is to be carried out on the distributor or injection pump, refer to the vehicle manual. TDC = Top Dead Centre
Caution : Always disconnect the vehicle battery before beginning.
2-1 Warning label 40 - 45.
It is important to warn the mechanic that forgetting timing pins can be dangerous. Use the warning labels as follows: Place a
40 or 45 warning label inside the cab on the steering wheel and display the other conspicuously under the bonnet.
2-2 Timing Pins 6 - 6,6 - 8,25 - 9,5 - 12,7 - 15,4.
Put the camshaft or injection pump gear, crankshaft sheave or motor flywheel at the gap point. Select and position the timing pins.
2-3 Timing bolts 105 - 110.
Place the shaft or injection pump gear at the gap point. Select and hand tighten the bolts.
2-4 TDC Finder Rod 35.
Position the engine at the timing point, at Top Dead Centre. Block the engine flywheel with the finder rod.
2-5 Timing Rod 20 and Feeler Gauges 25.
Position the engine at the timing point, at TDC. Block the camshaft as follows: Place the timing rod 20 in the groove at the
end of the camshaft (a) then rotate the camshaft until the rod 20 hits the cylinder head. Measure the gap at the other end
with the feeler gauges 25. At each end, place a feeler gauge 25 corresponding to half of the measured gap.
2-6 TDC Finder Pin 30.
Position the engine at the timing point, at TDC. Remove the timing gauge plug (b) from the cylinder block and thread in an
hand tighten the TDC finder pin 30. Make sure the finder pin 30 abutts the crankshaft at TDC.
2-7 Timing Tool 70 and Timing Screw 75.
Remove the vacuum pump (P) and replace it with the timing tool 70. Make sure that the timing tool 70 is in position at the
end of the crankshaft and then secure it with the timing screws 75.
2-8 Dial Indicator 01 and Dial Indicator Extensions 90 - 95.
Use the dial indicator with its original stylus (t) to take measurements using adapters 50 - 55 and feeler gauge 60. Fit the
extension 90 to carry out measurement with support 80 and sensor 85. Fit extension 95 to carry out measurement with
measurement rod 65. Unscrew the original stylus (t) from the dial indicator 01 and replace with the appropriate extension.
2-9 Measurement Rod 65 and Bolt 100.
Place the measurement rod 65 across the camshaft housing above the No. 1 cylinder inlet cam and attach the rod 65 with
the bolts 100. Fit the dial indicator 01 plus extension 95, pre-load (P) and secure (f).
2-10 Feeler gauge 60.
Position the engine at the timing point, at TDC. Remove the gap plug (b) from the cylinder head. Thread in and hand tighten
the feeler gauge 60 and fit a dial indicator with the original stylus (t). Pre-load (P) and secure (f).
2-11 Support 80 and Feeler Sensor 85.
Unscrew the inspection port plug (b) on the top of the pump. Insert the sensor 85 in the inspection port, position the support
85 and secure
(using the hex-head key 115)
2-12 Short 50 and long 55 Adapters.
Unscrew the inspection port plug (b) on the end of the pump. Thread in and finger tighten adapter 50 or 55. Fit the dial
indicator 01 plus the original stylus (t). Pre-load (P) and secure (f).
