Before getting started, you will need:
•
Pre-grown seedlings on starter plugs
with a minimum of 2 open leaves
•
Growing media, pumice stones
•
Fertilizer
•
4 litres of lukewarm tap water
•
55x35 cm cultivation insert set
•
55 cm cultivation light
Your choice of either:
•
55 cm fixture for cultivation light
•
Cultivation unit available in various sizes
to fit the cultivation insert set(s)
See details in-store or visit www.IKEA.com
for full details on each combination including
information on all the parts needed for
a complete kit.
Method:
1. Follow the assembly instructions to
secure the cultivation insert set top
section to the base tray, and connect
the water funnel and water gauge into
the top section. If you are using a light
fixture, follow the instructions to secure
this to the cultivation insert set before
connecting anything else. If using a
cultivation unit, follow the individual
instructions for assembly and connection
of the cultivation light(s). Place the
cultivation insert set(s) into the unit.
2. Take a pot and add a 2 cm layer of
pumice stones to the base.
3. Place one starter plug with seedling in
the pot and fill up with pumice stones
until reaching the top of the pot. Take
extra care when adding pumice stones
over the top of the starter plug where
the seedling meets the plug, so that the
sensitive young roots are not damaged.
The starter plug should be completely
covered with pumice stones.
4. Place the pot into the cultivation insert
set.
5. Repeat steps 2, 3 and 4 for each
seedling you want to replant in the
cultivation insert set.
6. Add a half measure of fertilizer needed
for 4 litres of water, and mix. In this
early stage of growth the plants are
small and therefore do not require a lot
of nutrients.
7. Use the water funnel to pour the
waterfertilizer solution into the
cultivation insert set base tray. The
pumice stones will immediately start
to soak up the solution and the water
gauge may indicate that the solution
level is below the MIN line.
8. Top up the base tray with lukewarm
tap water until the water gauge is at
the MAX level. Water-fertilizer solution
should be used for each top up after
this first top up unless temperatures are
constantly above 20°C. Then every other
top up should be tap water.
9. Pots not in use should be placed into the
cultivation insert set and covered with
a lid, included. The lid stops light from
reaching the water-fertilizer solution and
helps prevent algae growth. Some algae
growth on the surface of the pumice
stones is natural. This occurs when the
water-fertilizer solution reaches the
surface of the pumice stones and is
exposed to light. It is not harmful and
can easily be washed off any plants
before eating if necessary.
10. Turn on the cultivation light(s). A
minimum of 16 hours of light per day
is recommended, either from 100%
cultivation light if the plants are placed
in a dark room or from both cultivation
and natural light if placed by a window.
A timer connected to the cultivation light
can be used to control the amount of
light. For more information, visit www.
IKEA.com.
11. It is important not to let the pumice
stones completely dry out. Regularly
check that the water gauge is not at the
MIN line.
12. When required, top up with water-
fertilizer solution until the water gauge
reaches the MAX line. It is recommended
to only use half the amount of fertilizer
needed to make the water-fertilizer mix
in the first 2-4 top ups while the plants
still have small leaves. Typically, you will
need to top up the solution every 7-10
days or more frequently in temperatures
above 20°C, as the solution may
evaporate more quickly on a hot day.
13. Within 4-6 weeks, depending on your
chosen seed, your crops will be ready to
harvest. You can cut off what you need
and leave the rest of the plant to keep
growing.
14. After removing a plant, cover the empty
pot/hole with a lid.
