AS-Interface safety at work is recommended as an economical alternative in any
situation where the standard AS-Interface bus, in view of its advantages as a local bus,
entails that a large quantity of cabling will not be required. Thus when the AS-Interface
safety monitor is used as part of the bus system, already existing AS-Interface bus
configurations can be extended without difficulty, and safety modules with the
appropriate AS-Interface can looped into the network with equal ease. It generally
proves possible to continue to use existing AS-Interface masters and AS-Interface
power supply units. Some of the more important areas of use may be mentioned
below:
Large-scale wood or metal processing machines with numerous control elements
and safety sensor systems
Print and paper processing machines, cutting machines
Packaging machines (either single machines or machine groups)
Foodstuff processing machines
Conveyor systems for piece goods and bulk goods

Organisational measures

Documentation
It is essential that all the instructions of this Technical Manual be observed, especially
those given in the sections "Safety instructions" and "Putting the system into opera-
tion". Keep this Technical Manual in a safe place. It should be available at all times.
Safety prescriptions
You should have regard to the statutory regulations that apply locally and to the
prescriptions of professional trade associations.
Qualified personnel
The equipment should be installed, put into operation and maintained only by
professionally qualified personnel. Electrical work may only be carried out by qualified
electricians.
Repairs
Repair work, especially involving the opening of the housing, may only be carried out
by the manufacturer or by a person acting with the manufacturer's authorisation,
working in clean conditions (e.g. for the replacement of a scratched scanner pane).
Disposal
Electronic scrap is special category waste! Please observe the locally valid prescrip-
tions for the disposal of such waste. The SIGUARD LS4 AS-Interface laser scanner
does not contain any batteries that need to be removed before the equipment is dis-
posed of.
