Running In

Note:
This motor has been constructed to the closest possible tolerances however due to the use of
different materials it will still be necessary to run the motor in to ensure maximum power and
long life.
Preparing to run the motor in:
The motor should be mounted into the model in accordance with the instructions and all screws
or bolts must be correctly tightened. All components such as the clutch, exhaust tank and fuel
lines must be correctly fi tted and connected. Always use a clean oiled air fi lter. Our motors have
been designed for use with Magnum model fuel with a maximum Nitromethan content of 20%.
The motor should be run-in with the same fuel that will be used in normal use. The choice of
glow plug is dependent on the air temperature, in cold weather (between app. -1 and +5° C) a
plug with a rating of '3' is ideal. When the temperature is app. 10 to 20° C '4' is a good choice
and in mid summer when the temperature is between 20 and 40° C a plug with '5' or '6' is
recommended.
Starting the motor for the fi rst time:
Fill the tank with the correct Magnum fuel.
The carburettor needles are factory pre-set for normal operation but for running-in they will need to be
altered slightly. Open the main needle one turn (anticlockwise) and turn the Air Bleed Screw app. ½ turn
clockwise so that the carburettor barrel stays slightly open (visually check this). This will raise the tick-over
speed slightly and ensure that the mixture is slightly rich to run the motor in safely.
Place your fi nger over the end of the tuned pipe and operate the pull starter 3-4 times. This will draw fuel
into the carburettor
and you should be able to see the fuel being drawn in if you watch the transparent fuel tube feed to the
carburettor. Connect a fully charged glow plug power supply to the glow plug and use the pull starter to
start the motor. Be careful not to pull the pull starter out too far as this can damage the unit. We recom-
mend using a series of short sharp pulls as this will normally start the motor quickly and reduces the risk
of snapping the pull start cord. Due to the way in which the fuel/ air will be distributed within the motor's
crank case and cylinder, it is quite normal to have to operate the pull cord several times before the motor
runs. Once the motor is running leave the glow plug battery connected for app. 1 minute to allow the mo-
tor to reach the correct operating temperature. After the glow plug battery has been disconnected slowly
open the throttle and ensure that the motor continues to run and increases it's RPM.
Running-In:
The motor should be run for 2-3 tanks with the needle in this position but not at full throttle! After every tank fi lling the motor must be allowed to fully
cool down before starting it again. After the 3rd tank the needle can be gradually closed in 1/8 steps to increase the power. REMEMBER, the motor must be
allowed to fully cool down between runs when running-in. This will extend the motors life, increase it's power and failure to run the motor in properly will
invalidate the warranty!
Checking the motors temperature:
In normal use the cylinder head temperature should not exceed 120° C. If the motor is running too hot, richen the mixture by 1/8 of a turn until the correct
temperature is achieved. For accurate monitoring of the motors's temperature we recommend using our Contact Less Inferred Thermometer, Order No. 17
0133. The temperature should be measured at the glow plug.
Carburettor basic settings:
If you totally loose the setting for your carburettor here are the correct basic
needle positions. Firstly screw the needles fully in (do not force!).
Main Needle:
3 Turns Open
Low Needle:
3,25 Turns Open (with throttle closed)
Idle speed adjustable screw:
Carburettor barrel should stay 0.6 - 1 mm open
Warning!
Opening the motor will invalidate the warranty as will not using our Magnum Model
fuel!
Wishing you many hours of trouble free operation - Your JAMARA Team!
