b. Hydraulic brakes
Hydraulic disc brakes do not have to be disconnected to remove the wheel. But always make sure to
insert a plastic spacer between brake pads (when the wheel is removed) to prevent the brake pads
squeezing together. Do not pull the brake lever when the wheel is removed and a spacer is not
installed.
!!! Always check the brakes before riding. If you are in any doubt, contact your Rascal dealer or
Rascal Bikes approved service center.
BAD WEATHER WARNING
Always be aware that brakes do not work as efficiently in wet weather as they do in the dry. Even
well-maintained brakes will require more pressure on the lever and a longer distance to stop. Make
sure to remind your child to familiarize themselves with braking when they ride in variable
conditions. Also remember that visibility is reduced in the wet.
Wheel Rims, Brake Pads and Discs
7.
Dirty or greasy rims, disc brakes and brake pads can reduce the efficiency of brakes. To clean the
rims, wipe them with a clean cloth or wash them with soapy water, rinse thoroughly and let them
dry. If the rims are particularly dirty or there are oily marks on them, wipe the rims with a bicycle
specific brake cleaner.
The same maintenance applies to the hydraulic brake discs and brake pads. When lubricating the
chain or suspension forks, make sure that the oil does not get on the rims and brakes. If this happens,
use a bicycle specific degreaser to remove all traces of the lubricant before riding. Brake pads on
hydraulic disc brakes must be replaced if the total thickness of the backing plate and pad is less than
3mm. We recommend replacing pads with the same organic compound to maintain performance.
Do not use solvents to clean greasy components!
a. Removing rear wheel of a Belt Drive bicycle
In case of a puncture, you will need to remove the rear wheel from the frame. This happens in few
easy steps:
1) Disconnect brake cable to allow room for tyre to pass the break arms
2) Disconnect shifter cable from hub – to do this, shift to the easiest gear
3) Loosen the bolts on the belt-tensioners
4) Loosen nuts holding rear axle
5) Push the wheel forward to release the belt from the sprocket
6) Move the belt out of the way and pull the wheel out.
