If you decide to replace any of the parts, we recommend using compatible
component and follow the manufacturer's recommendations. If you do not have
sufficient experience or tools, consult your dealer. Any unprofessional
modifications to the bicycle may cause serious or fatal injuries.
Basic Maintenance and Use
Remember that preventive maintenance is key to keeping your bike in perfect condition.
Cleaning
1.
Cleaning your bike regularly makes it easier to detect any defects, worn/loose parts or frame
damage. We strongly recommend using a bicycle cleaner solution with a sponge and/or soft brush
and always rinse thoroughly with water after. Do not clean with a pressure hose or gun as it could
damage the bearings!
Lubricants
2.
If your bicycle has a belt drive, you do not need to use a lubricant. It would only attract dirt.
If your bicycle has a chain drive, it requires regular cleaning and lubricating. Always avoid storing a
bike with a wet chain as corrosion may occur.
After washing your bike we recommend using a water-repellent product, letting it dry and then
lubricating the essential moving parts. Do not lubricate brake arms, brake levers and cable housing.
The Rascal Bikes wheel hubs have sealed bearings which do not require maintenance. However, it is
worth regularly giving the wheels a quick spin in the air to check they are rotating freely.
If you have a bike with a full suspension fork, make sure that the stanchions are kept clean. We also
recommend regular treatment with a silicone spray designed for suspension forks. Depending on the
type of use and terrain, the fork requires a basic service and an oil change after every 40-60 hours of
riding.
Drive Belt Tension
3.
Unlike a traditional chain, drive belts do not stretch and consequently there is no reduction in
pedaling performance. However, it may sometimes be necessary to re-tension the belt, e.g. after a
repair to the wheel. The belt tension can be easily adjusted using the tensioning bolts located near to
the rear wheel axle mount (between the axle and the rear fork dropouts).
To increase the belt tension, turn the tensioning bolt clockwise. To reduce the tension, turn the
tensioning bolt anticlockwise. Adjust the left and right tensioning bolts so that the rear wheel is
seated in the center of the frame. When the belt is pressed downwards in the middle, the vertical
sag should not exceed 20 mm. Do not over-tighten the belt as this will adversely affect the handling
of the bike.
