The following table gives you an overview of abbreviations and
terminology used in this manual.
Term Definition
capillary Thin metal or PEEK tube that connects compo-
nents or devices in an HPLC system.
column The column is filled with a matrix. This matrix
can separate individual substances by interact-
ing differently with the analytes in a solvent.
chromatog- Procedure for the separation of a mixture of
raphy substances with the help of a mobile and a
stationary phase.
GLP A quality control mechanism for laboratories
(Good Laboratory Practice).
HPLC High Pressure Liquid Chromatography
Unique address of a sender or 
IP address
receiver in local networks or on the internet
(Internet protocol).
IQ Proof of adequate installation of a device.
LAN Local area network (LAN). Network in which
HPLC devices and a computer are connected
with each other to access the devices.
LAN-DHCP Local computer network with automatic con-
figuration (Local Area Network - Dynamic Host
Configuration Protocol), consisting of an ether-
net card and a LAN connection cable (patch
cable):
mobile The flowing agent that transports the sub-
phase stances to be separated or isolated through the
column.
OQ Extensive functionality test of the single devices
of an HPLC system (Operation Qualification).
Peltier Electrochemical converter that generates a
device temperature difference when current from one
side of the converter to the other.
port Internal computer address of the interface of
the local network.
PQ The certificate of performance of an HPLC sys-
tem (Performance Qualification) based on a
standardized testing environment.
