TAKING CARE OF UNEXPECTED PROBLEMS

ENGINE

Engine Will Not Start

Possible Cause
Fuel valve OFF.
Choke open.
Ignition switch OFF.
Out of fuel.
Bad fuel; pump stored without
treating or draining gasoline, or
refueled with bad gasoline.
Low engine oil level caused Oil
Alert to stop engine.
Spark plug faulty, fouled, or
improperly gapped.
Spark plug wet with fuel
(flooded engine).
Fuel filter clogged, carburetor
malfunction, ignition
malfunction, valves stuck, etc.

Engine Lacks Power

Possible Cause
Throttle lever not in the FAST
position.
Air filter element clogged.
Bad fuel; pump stored without
treating or draining gasoline, or
refueled with bad gasoline.
Fuel filter clogged, carburetor
malfunction, ignition
malfunction, valves stuck, etc.
Move fuel valve lever to ON position.
Move choke lever to CLOSED position unless engine
is warm.
Turn ignition switch to ON position.
Refuel (see page 32).
Drain fuel tank and carburetor (see page 43).
Refuel with fresh gasoline (see page 32).
Add oil (see page 34)
Gap or replace spark plug (see page 40).
Dry and reinstall spark plug. Start engine with
throttle lever in FAST position.
Take the pump to your servicing dealer, or refer to
shop manual.
Move the throttle lever to the FAST position.
Clean or replace air filter element (see page 38).
Drain fuel tank and carburetor (see page 43).
Refuel with fresh gasoline (see page 32).
