ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS
CORSAIR
HULL
PHOTO 1. Assemble the hull structure by following the numerical order of the drawing. Before gluing the frames in place make
sure that they are correctly fitted into position "abutting" up against the corresponding slots on the false keel. It is important that
the frames are completely perpendicular to the false keel. For this operation use white glue (carpenter's glue) as the adhesive.
PHOTO 2. Line the frame, no. 9, working from the bottom slot to the top. Use contact glue (cobbler's glue) as an adhesive.
Carefully read the manufacturer's instructions for use. Trim off any excess lining using a cutter.
PHOTO 3. Before you line the deck, mo. 15, using a pencil, draw a line that divides the deck lengthways into two equal parts.
Start to line the deck working from the centre outwards. Turn this part over and, resting on a flat surface, trim away the excess
lining.
PHOTO 4. To simulate the planking effect and the caulking of the deck, using a pencil, highlight the lengthways lines that mark
out the edges of the strips of lining. Alternately mark out crossways lines every 100 mm. Finally pencil in dots next to the
crossways lines, to simulate nails.
PHOTO 5. Following the same procedure as in photos 3 and 4, line the poop deck, no. 17.
PHOTO 6. Glue the lined decks onto the structure of the ship. It is important that the decks should be correctly adapted to the
top part of the frames. Use a quick-drying glue for this process.
PHOTO 7. Glue (using white glue), the reinforcing chocks, nos. 19 and 20, to the false keel.
PHOTO 8. Glue the reinforcing chocks, nos. 21, 22 and 23, to the false keel.
PHOTO 9. Line one side of each bulwark, no. 24, with the lining, no. 25. Use contact glue for this work.
PHOTO 10. Using a pencil mark out lengthways lines on the bulwarks lining.
PHOTO 11. Glue the bulwarks into place on the hull structure, marrying the slots of the bulwarks to the slots in the decks. The
lined parts of the bulwarks must be facing the inside of the ship.
PHOTO 12 Following the same process as for photos 3 y 4 line the deck, no. 26.
PHOTO 13. Glue the lined deck 3 mm. below the top edge of the bulwarks, and adjust them to the bow. Glue the finial, no. 28,
in place. Glue the stringers, no. 29, to the joint between the bulwarks and the deck.
PHOTO 14. The stringers must run from the bow to the stern bulkhead tight against the bulwarks.
PHOTO 15. To achieve a good contact surface for he lining strakes, with the help of a sander, sand down the reinforcing chocks
and the edge of the frames, working from bow to stern.
PHOTO 16. Carry out the same operation as in the previous photo but this time at the stern of the ship, and sanding from stern
to bow.
PHOTO 17. Glue the bases of the quarter gallery onto the upper stern reinforcing frame. Sand down the stern area.
PHOTO 18. Line the upper stern, no. 31, and glue it tight up against the stern of the hull. Using quick-drying glue, glue the
finials, nos. 33, 34 and 35, and the stringers, nos. 36 and 37, into place.
PHOTO 19. Before starting to line the hull, immerse the lining strakes, nos. 38 and 39, in water for at least an hour, so that the
wood can recover its original elasticity. Starting from the central frames, glue and pin the master strake, no. 38, using the
frame slots as a guide. Line the hull on both sides simultaneously, i.e. for each strake fitted to the left side fit its opposite number
on the right side.
PHOTO 20. Adapt the master strake so that it fits into the slots in the bow frames.
PHOTO 21. The strakes must be joined at the bow, completely covering the reinforcing chocks and the false keel.
PHOTO 22. The strakes must run as far as the upper stern. Use a saw to trim off the excess length of the strakes.
PHOTO 23. Glue and pin the lining strakes, no. 39, starting the process alongside the master strake, no. 38, and continuing
until you have completely covered the top part of the bulwarks. In the same way, continue the lining from the false keel up
towards the master strake.
PHOTO 24. Using a cutter, trim away the lining that covers the gun ports.
PHOTO 25. To finish off the lining of the hull make, to measure, a number of lengths of strake to fill in the gaps. These usually
come to a point at one end.
PHOTO 26. To complete the lining of the stern make up a number of wedge shaped pieces.
PHOTO 27. Having finished the lining process, sand down the whole of the hull and file down the heads of the pins using a file.
PHOTO 28. At both the bow and the false keel, at the stern, a 4 mm. thick flat area must be left. Line the underside of the bases
for the galleries.
PHOTO 29. Line the stern galleries and sand them down to smooth the surface.
PHOTO 30. Using a flat file, work over the inside edge of the gun ports and paint them black.
PHOTO 31. Using contact glue as an adhesive, line the upper stern using the lining strips, no. 40, and file down any excess.
PHOTO 32. Line the exterior of the bulwarks, starting from the base until they are completely covered. Start lining the hull just
below the bulwarks lining, continuing down towards the false keel. Alternate the lining work on both sides of the hull. Use
contact glue for this process.
PHOTO 33. Continue to line the hull working from the false keel up towards the bulwarks.
PHOTO 34. To finish off the lining of the hull make, to measure, a number of lengths to fill in the gaps. Complete the lining of the
stem by making up a number of made-to-measure wedge shaped pieces.
PHOTO 35. Line the underside of the bases of the galleries using the lining, no. 43. A 4 mm. thick flat area must be left on the
false keel in the stern area.
PHOTO 36. A 4 mm. flat area must be left at the bow.
PHOTO 37. Line the stern galleries using the lining, no. 44.
PHOTO 38. Having finished the lining, sand down the whole of the hull using fine grain sandpaper. Check out the positioning on
Plan 2 before gluing the parts, nos. 45, 46, 47, 48 and 49, into place.
PHOTO 39. Select the strips to make up the rubbing strakes, nos. 50 and 51. Sand down these strips and immerse them in
water for an hour, so that they gain in elasticity. Fit and glue the rubbing strakes to the hull. Using quick-drying glue, after first
checking Plan 1. Make up and glue the parts, nos. 52 and 53, into place.
PHOTO 40. The rubbing strakes must cover the hull, from the stem to the stern galleries. See Plan 1.
PHOTO 41. Fit the first rubbing strake, no. 54, in such a way that it covers the joint between the hull lining and the upper stern.
Then glue the second rubbing strake parallel, at a distance of 10 mm. from the first. Use quick-drying glue for this operation.
