This general information document on Petzl technical ice axes is
inseparable from the specific Instructions for Use for each ice axe.
It applies to the QUARK, NOMIC and ERGONOMIC ice axes. The
diagrams use the QUARK as an example, but are valid for all three
ice axes.
These instructions explain how to correctly use your equipment. Only
certain techniques and uses are described.
The warning symbols inform you of some potential dangers related to
the use of your equipment, but it is impossible to describe them all.
Check Petzl.com for updates and additional information.
You are responsible for heeding each warning and using your
equipment correctly. Any misuse of this equipment will create
additional dangers. Contact Petzl if you have any doubts or difficulty
understanding these instructions.
1. Field of application
Personal protective equipment (PPE) used for fall protection.
Technical ice axes for climbing in steep, snow-covered terrain, high-
level glacial routes, and ice falls.
This product must not be pushed beyond its limits, nor be used for
any purpose other than that for which it is designed.
Responsibility
WARNING
Activities involving the use of this equipment are
inherently dangerous.
You are responsible for your own actions, decisions and
safety.
Before using this equipment, you must:
- Read and understand all Instructions for Use.
- Get specific training in its proper use.
- Become acquainted with its capabilities and limitations.
- Understand and accept the risks involved.
Failure to heed any of these warnings may result in severe
injury or death.
This product must only be used by competent and responsible
persons, or those placed under the direct and visual control of a
competent and responsible person.
You are responsible for your actions, your decisions and your safety
and you assume the consequences of same. If you are not able, or
not in a position to assume this responsibility, or if you do not fully
understand the Instructions for Use, do not use this equipment.
2. Nomenclature

Principal materials: steel pick and spike, aluminum alloy shaft.
3. Inspection, points to verify
Petzl recommends a detailed inspection at least once every 12
months. Warning: your intensity of use may cause you to inspect your
PPE more frequently. Follow the procedures described at Petzl.com.
Record the results on your PPE inspection form.
Before each use
Visually inspect the condition of the ice axe: check for cracks in
the pick or shaft, any play at the head/shaft or shaft/handle joints,
permanent pick or shaft deformation, corrosion, worn pick.
If any of these signs are present, do not use the ice axe.
Picks used for dry tooling must be changed out more frequently.
Regularly check the tightness of the screws; securely tighten the pick.
During use
It is important to regularly monitor the condition of the product and its
connections to the other equipment in the system. Make sure that all
items of equipment are correctly positioned with respect to each other.

Verify that this product is compatible with the other elements of the
system in your application (compatible = good functional interaction).

Pick release is done by using a forward and backward motion.
WARNING: Petzl does not recommend using an ice axe as an anchor
point for a belay or as a point of protection for a fall, even a short one.
3. Resting position
It is important to keep your body weight on the lanyard when using
the ice axe as a resting point (no dynamic load, no fall allowed).
WARNING: the hole in the GRIPREST on the NOMIC ice axe is
designed only for attaching a leash to help prevent losing the ice axe.
WARNING: when using a leash or a lanyard attached to an ice axe,
there is a risk of the ice axe hitting your face during a fall.
4. Specific dry tooling precautions
Dry tooling puts high stress on an ice axe, so the DRY type 2 pick is
to be used for this activity. WARNING: certain wedging placements
are especially stressful: slotting the pick horizontally and/or any torque
applied to the pick, levering the shaft, or jamming the entire head of
the ice axe.
These wedging placements (and the ice axe falling during the course
of the activity) shorten the lifetime of the ice axe and can cause
immediate failure of the ice axe while in use.
After dry tooling, you must carefully inspect your ice axes.

When to retire your equipment:
WARNING: an exceptional event can lead you to retire a product after
only one use, depending on the type and intensity of usage and the
environment of usage (harsh environments, marine environments,
sharp edges, extreme temperatures, chemicals...).
A product must be retired when:
- It has been subjected to a major fall or load.
- It fails to pass inspection. You have any doubt as to its reliability.
- You do not know its full usage history.
- When it becomes obsolete due to changes in legislation, standards,
technique or incompatibility with other equipment...
Destroy these products to prevent further use.

3. Contrôle, points à vérifier
Petzl conseille une vérification approfondie au minimum tous les 12
mois. Attention, l'intensité de votre usage peut vous amener à vérifier
plus fréquemment votre EPI. Respectez les modes opératoires décrits
sur le site Petzl.com. Enregistrez les résultats sur la fiche de vie de
votre EPI.
Avant toute utilisation
Contrôlez visuellement l'état du piolet : présence de fissure(s) sur la
lame ou l'emmanchement, présence de jeu entre les jonctions tête/
manche ou manche/poignée, déformation permanente de la lame ou
du manche, corrosion, usure de la lame.
Si un de ces cas se présente, n'utilisez plus ce piolet.
Les lames utilisées en dry tooling devront être changées plus
fréquemment.
Contrôlez régulièrement le serrage des vis, serrez fermement la lame.
Pendant l'utilisation
Il est important de contrôler régulièrement l'état du produit et de ses
connexions avec les autres équipements du système. Assurez-vous
du bon positionnement des équipements les uns par rapport aux
autres.
4. Compatibilité
Vérifiez la compatibilité de ce produit avec les autres éléments du
système dans votre application (compatibilité = bonne interaction
fonctionnelle).

Le désancrage de la lame se fait par un mouvement d'avant en arrière.
Attention, Petzl ne recommande pas l'usage d'un piolet comme point
d'ancrage d'un relais ou comme point d'assurage d'une chute, même
de faible hauteur.
3. Position de repos
Il est important de rester en tension sur sa longe lorsque l'on utilise
son piolet comme point de repos (pas de surcharge dynamique,
aucune chute tolérée). Attention, le trou du GRIPREST du piolet
NOMIC a été conçu uniquement pour y connecter une dragonne et
éviter la perte du piolet.
Attention, lors de l'utilisation d'un leash ou d'une longe reliée aux
piolets, il y a un risque de prendre le piolet dans la figure lors d'une
chute.
4. Précautions spécifiques en dry tooling
La pratique du dry tooling sollicite fortement les piolets et s'utilise
avec la lame de type 2 DRY. Attention, certains coincements sont
particulièrement contraignants : verrouillage horizontal ou en torsion
de lame, travail du manche en flexion, coincement de toute la tête
du piolet.
Ces coincements et les chutes du piolet en cours d'activité accélèrent
le vieillissement et peuvent provoquer une rupture immédiate du piolet
pendant l'utilisation.
Après une séance de dry tooling, vous devez vérifier attentivement
vos piolets.
6. Informations complémentaires
Ce produit est conforme au règlement (UE) 2016/425 relatif aux
équipements de protection individuelle. La déclaration de conformité

Mise au rebut :
ATTENTION, un événement exceptionnel peut vous conduire à rebuter
un produit après une seule utilisation (type et intensité d'utilisation,
environnements d'utilisation : milieux agressifs, milieux marins, arêtes
coupantes, températures extrêmes, produits chimiques...).
Un produit doit être rebuté quand :
- Il a subi une chute ou un effort important.
- Le résultat des vérifications du produit n'est pas satisfaisant. Vous
avez un doute sur sa fiabilité.
- Vous ne connaissez pas son historique complet d'utilisation.
- Quand son usage est obsolète (évolution législative, normative,
technique ou incompatibilité avec d'autres équipements...).
Détruisez ces produits pour éviter une future utilisation.

1. Anwendungsbereich
Persönliche Schutzausrüstung (PSA) zum Schutz gegen Absturz.
Technische Eispickel/Eisgeräte zum Klettern in steilem, kombiniertem
Gelände, für schwierige Eistouren und zum Eisklettern.
Dieses Produkt darf nicht über seine Grenzen hinaus belastet werden.
Es darf ausschließlich zu dem Zweck verwendet werden, für den es
entwickelt wurde.

3. Überprüfung, zu kontrollierende
Punkte
Petzl empfiehlt eine gründliche Überprüfung mindestens alle 12
Monate. Achtung: Abhängig von der Gebrauchsintensität muss Ihre
PSA gegebenenfalls häufiger überprüft werden. Bitte beachten Sie
die auf Petzl.com beschriebenen Vorgehensweisen. Tragen Sie die
Ergebnisse in den Prüfbericht Ihrer PSA ein.
Vor jedem Einsatz
Überprüfen Sie den Zustand des Eisgeräts (visuelle Kontrolle): Risse an
Haue oder Schaftverbindung, Spiel an der Verbindung zwischen Kopf
und Schaft oder Schaft und Griff, permanente Verformung von Haue
oder Schaft, Korrosionserscheinungen, Abnutzungserscheinungen
an der Haue.
Wenn Sie einen dieser Mängel feststellen, verwenden Sie das Eisgerät
nicht mehr.
Zum Drytooling verwendete Hauen müssten häufiger ausgewechselt
werden.
Überprüfen Sie regelmäßig, ob die Schrauben fest angezogen sind
und ziehen Sie die Haue gut fest.
Während des Gebrauchs
Es ist unerlässlich, den Zustand des Produkts und seiner
Verbindungen mit anderen Ausrüstungsgegenständen im System
regelmäßig zu überprüfen. Stellen Sie stets sicher, dass die einzelnen
Ausrüstungsgegenstände im System richtig zueinander positioniert
sind.
4. Kompatibilität
Überprüfen Sie die Kompatibilität dieses Produkts mit den
anderen Elementen Ihres Systems (Kompatibilität = funktionelles
Zusammenspiel).

Zum Lösen der Haue aus dem Eis das Gerät vor- und zurückbewegen.
Achtung: Petzl rät von der Verwendung eines Eisgeräts als Fixpunkt
am Standplatz oder als Sicherungspunkt für einen Sturz (auch bei
geringer Sturzhöhe) ab.
3. Rastposition
Es ist wichtig, dass Sie Ihr Verbindungsmittel gestrafft halten, wenn
Sie sich zum Ausruhen in das Eisgerät hängen (keine dynamische
Überlast, ein Sturz muss ausgeschlossen sein). Achtung: Die Öse
der GRIPREST-Fingerauflage am NOMIC-Eisgerät ist ausschließlich
zur Befestigung einer Handschlaufe bestimmt, um das Eisgerät nicht
zu verlieren.
Achtung: Bei Benutzung einer Leash oder einer mit den Eisgeräten
verbundenen Fangleine besteht das Risiko, dass Ihnen das Eisgerät im
Falle eines Sturzes ins Gesicht geschleudert wird.
4. Spezielle Vorsichtsmaßnahmen beim Drytooling
Beim Drytooling werden die Eisgeräte stark beansprucht. Hier kommt
die DRY-Haue (Typ 2) zum Einsatz. Achtung: Einige Klemmtechniken
beanspruchen die Eisgeräte besonders stark: Verklemmen der Haue
in einem horizontalen Riss, Verdrehen der Haue, Belastung des
gebogenen Schafts, Verkeilen des kompletten Gerätekopfs.
Diese Klemmtechniken und das Herabfallen des Eisgeräts aus der Tour
beschleunigen den Verschleiß und können zu einem sofortigen Bruch
des Geräts während der Benutzung führen.
Nach einer Drytooling-Session müssen Sie Ihre Eisgeräte einer
sorgfältigen Kontrolle unterziehen.
6. Zusätzliche Informationen
Das Produkt entspricht der PSA-Verordnung (EU) 2016/425. Die EU-
Konformitätserklärung ist auf Petzl.com verfügbar.
Aussondern von Ausrüstung:
ACHTUNG: Außergewöhnliche Umstände können die Aussonderung
eines Produkts nach einer einmaligen Anwendung erforderlich machen
(Art und Intensität der Benutzung, Anwendungsbereich: aggressive
Umgebungen, Meeresklima, scharfe Kanten, extreme Temperaturen,
Chemikalien usw.).
In folgenden Fällen muss ein Produkt ausgesondert werden:
- Es wurde einem schweren Sturz oder einer schweren Belastung
ausgesetzt.
- Das Produkt fällt bei der PSA-Überprüfung durch. Sie bezweifeln
seine Zuverlässigkeit.
- Die vollständige Gebrauchsgeschichte ist nicht bekannt.
- Das Produkt ist veraltet (Änderung der gesetzlichen Bestimmungen,
der Normen oder der technischen Vorschriften, Inkompatibilität mit
anderen Ausrüstungsgegenständen usw.).
Zerstören und entsorgen Sie diese Produkte, um ihren weiteren
Gebrauch zu verhindern.
