SIMOVERT MASTERDRIVES
When motors are fed from drive frequency converters, they are subject
to a higher stressing than when fed directly online from sinusoidal
supplies as a result of the fast switching sequences in the drive
converter. This results in a significantly higher voltage stressing of the
winding insulation, higher temperature rise as well as additional losses
and increased motor noise.
The sinusoidal filters for SIMOVERT MASTERDRIVES frequency
converters reduce these additional motor stresses.
The sinusoidal filter
♦ generates an almost sinusoidal motor voltage and an absolute
sinusoidal motor current,
♦ reduces the voltage gradient (rate of rise) at the motor terminals to
values dv/dt << 500 V/µs,
♦ prevents transient voltage spikes occuring at the motor terminals,
♦ reduces supplementary motor losses, and
♦ reduces motor noise.
The sinudoidal filter simultaneously reduces, for long motor cables, the
charging current spikes, which additionally stress the drive converter
due to the periodic re-charging of the cable capacitances.
The sinusoidal filter can be used with the following control versions
♦ VC (Vector Control)
of the SIMOVERT MASTERDRIVES drive converter series.
When a sinusoidal filter is used, it does not result in any restrictions
regarding the maximum drive converter output current.
Exception:
The following drive converters and inverters achieve only 75 % of their
rated current when a sinusoidal filter is used (de-rating according to the
drive converter Operating Instructions as a result of operation at a
6 kHz pulse frequency):

Restrictions also apply as far as the following points are concerned:
♦ The maximum drive converter output voltage is limited to
• approx. 83 % (3-ph. 400 V - 460 V AC)
• approx. 87 % (3-ph. 500 V - 575 V AC) of the drive converter
input voltage according to Table 4-1.
♦ The control accuracy in the vector control types is slightly reduced.
♦ The drive converter pulse frequency must be set to a fixed value
according to Table 4-1.
♦ The maximum permissible motor cable length is limited according to
Section 3.3.
