MOON MAP

This basic moon map shows most of the interesting features that can be seen through a tele-
scope. The largest crater on the moon is Bailly (just under 300 km). A small telescope will show
craters with a diameter of five and ten kilometres. The largest lunar crater is Tycho, while the
brightest crater is Aristarchus. The largest detail can be seen when the moon is in the first or
last quarter, when the sun's rays touch on the moon at an angle and throws shadows, thereby
providing more contrast. The moon always faces the Earth with the same side, as it rotates once
on it axis, while it orbits the Earth once.
In fact, we can see more than 50% of the moon, due to the libration. This expression would
require detailed explanations. The reader is recommended to refer to a good reference book.
Comment:
The orientation of an object, as it is seen through a telescope may not necessarily be the same as
that seen with the naked eye. The moon is a good example. Conventionally defined, the northern
edge of the moon is the one that is closest to the northern horizon.
