MEMBRANE DRYER
INSTALLATION & MAINTENANCE

CAU T I O N
Always make sure that bowl is properly inserted into body and
turned to lock bowl in place before applying pressure to unit.
Purge air silencer should be properly installed and fastened with
the set screw. When properly installed, the alignment marking on
the purge air silencer will line up with the alignment mark on the
body casting, indicating proper assembly. Failure to do so may
cause air pressure to blow bowl off of unit, resulting in serious per-
sonal injury or death.
Refer also to additional warnings, cautions and warranty on last
page of this Installation and Maintenance Sheet.
Description
Wilkerson Membrane Dryers are intended to remove water vapor
from the compressed air system. Dew points as low
as -40ºF (-40ºC) atmospheric dew point, or 0ºF (-17ºC) pressure dew
point, are achievable when operated within rated unit specifica-
tions. (Pressure dew point rated @100 psig inlet pressure.)
General Safety Information
RELEASE ALL AIR PRESSURE FROM INTENDED AIRLINE
BEFORE INSTALLATION.
DO NOT exceed the pressure and temperature ratings as shown
in the specifications.
Make sure that the purge air silencer is properly installed and
the set screw tightened before pressurizing the air system.
DO NOT attempt to remove bowl or service unit
while pressurized!

Operation
The Membrane Super Dryer is an inherently simple device. It has no
moving parts, and requires no adjustment. The purge rate (sweep
air) is preset within the membrane module by means of a fixed ori-
fice, and there are no adjustments or power requirements.
Installation
1. REFER TO CAUTIONS — THIS PAGE AND LAST PAGE.
2. Install as close as possible to the point of use. Make sure to stay
within the specifications envelope. The unit must be mounted
with the inlet and outlet ports in a horizontal plane, and the
bowl hanging down from the casting body.

3. Make sure the dryer is installed with the airflow going in the
direction of the arrow. For reference, correct airflow is down
through the membrane tube bundle, then back up through the
center tube to the dryer outlet. A dryer piped in backwards will
not function properly.
4. Oil aerosols and solid particles will rapidly contaminate the
membrane and render it ineffective. A 0.01 micron coalescing
filter upstream of the dryer is required for proper operation. It is
recommended that a 5 micron prefilter be installed upstream
of the coalescing filter for optimum system performance. Due to
various system requirements, some applications may require the
use of metal bowls on the prefilter and coalescing filter. See
page 4 for recommended prefilter and coalescing filter model
numbers.
5. It is recommended that you pipe in a by-pass line with isolation
valves, so that the dryer and filters can be serviced without
interruption of air to the application.
Maintenance
1. There are many variables in an air system, so it is difficult to pre-
dict the life of any particular component. With proper filtration
upstream, the membrane module should give several years of
dependable performance. A gradual decrease in performance
will occur, as well as a gradual increase in pressure drop. When
this is noticed, the first thing that should be done is to check the
filters upstream, and replace the elements as necessary. If dryer
performance does not improve, it is time to replace the mem-
brane module.
2. CAUTION! TURN OFF THE AIR SUPPLY AND DEPRESSURIZE THE LINE
!
CONTAINING THE DRYER UNIT!
3. To replace the membrane module:
The bowl assembly is a bayonet mount, with a safety locking
detent. To remove the bowl, push straight UP on the bowl, then
rotate counterclockwise (as viewed from below the bowl). The
bowl and membrane module are then separated from the
casting body by lowering down until clear of the body. The
membrane module is then removed in the fashion detailed on
the following page.
Models MSD-XX-KA1X and MSD-XX-KA2X:
(a) Remove the membrane module from the bowl by pulling the
module straight out of the top of the bowl. There are O-rings
sealing the outside diameter of the module to the inside diam-
eter of the bowl. Turning or twisting the module while pulling
upward may facilitate removal.
(b) To replace bottom plate O-ring, and to facilitate replacement
of lower module to bowl O-ring, carefully remove the internal
retaining ring, using the proper tool. Use a long wooden dowel
or a hammer handle to tap the bottom plate out of the bowl
from the inside. The lower O-ring can now be replaced.
!
CAUTION! When re-installing the bottom plate, the internal
retaining ring MUST BE securely seated in its mating groove in
the bowl, below the bottom plate. Failure to do so could cause
air pressure to blow the bottom plate off the bowl, causing seri-
ous personal injury or death.
(c) To install a new membrane module, place a VERY LIGHT FILM of
grease on the outside diameter of the plastic end caps of the
module, taking care not to contaminate the ends of the mod-
ule with grease.
(d) Insert the module into the bowl with a turning or twisting
motion, taking care not to damage the o-rings that seal the
module to the bowl. Do not grasp the center tube of the mem-
brane with any tool that may damage or deform the tube.
WHEN PROPERLY INSTALLED, THE MODULE BOTTOMS OUT
AGAINST THE BOWL BOTTOM PLATE.
