Battery Isolator
If a battery isolator is installed for parallel charging of separated
batteries, switch 7 must be set in the 'ON' position.
Switch 7
The battery charger is unable to sense the battery voltage
'through' the battery isolator. When switch 7 is in the 'ON' posi-
tion, the sense/ protection circuitry of the battery charger is
modified in a way that the battery charger also starts operating
if no battery voltage is sensed. Reversed polarity protection of
the battery charger remains in function; although during con-
nection sparks may occur this is harmless to the battery charg-
er.
Also the charging voltage needs to be compensated due to the
voltage drop over the diodes of the battery isolator.
Set switch 6 to the 'ON' position (see also 'Battery Charge
Voltage')
Battery Charging
Push the boat plug into the dockside socket, thus connecting
the inverter/charger to 220 (240) Volts. The green LED 'AC
INPUT' will light up to indicate that mains voltage is available.
Switch the battery charger 'ON' and the green LED 'CHARGER
ON' will light.
A moment later the LOAD PHASE INDICATOR and the VOLT
and CURRENT bar will light and the equipment is operational.
At first, the charger will operate in the 'BOOST' phase and all
LEDs in the current bar will be lit to show that charging is taking
place at maximum charging current.
The voltage will increase slowly (depending upon capacity and
charge condition of your batteries) as indicated on the voltage
bar until it reaches 14.2 Volts resp. 28.4 Volts and the regulator
operates to limit the charge current (see the current bar).
After some time the charge current is minimal and the charger
switches to the float phase. The charger can be turned off with
the 'OFF' switch. If you then switch the charger on, the whole
process will be repeated from the start.

Description of operation

The Vetus battery
charger
has
a
charge character-
istic that can be
called I/U float.
BOOST PHASE
When dockside voltage is connected and the charger is 'ON', it
will automatically start to charge the batteries with an average
maximum current, see page 10.
EQUALIZE PHASE
As soon as the battery gas pressure is reached (14.2 Volts resp.
28.2 Volts) the charger switches to a lower current, whereby the
voltage remains at 14.2 Volts resp. 28.4 Volts. This is called an
I/U charge characteristic, and is essential for sealed batteries.
FLOAT PHASE
When the charge current has dropped to about 10% of the max-
imum charging current, the charge voltage is reduced to 13.5
Volts resp. 27.0 Volts; this reduces battery water consumption.
Protection
The charger is protected in a variety of ways, thus ensuring reli-
able operation.
Short Circuit
If the 220 Volt output is short circuited, then the glass fuse in the
boat mains connection will blow.
The 'AC INPUT' LED will go out, while dockside voltage will be
available on the boat mains. If the 12 Volt resp. 24 Volt charge
current short circuits before the charger is switched on, the
charger will not work. If the short circuit occurs during charging,
the current will be limited to the maximum charging current, see
page 10.
Overload/Overheating
As a basic principle, the charger cannot be overloaded, as it lim-
its the maximum charge current itself. However, if the ambient
temperature is too high, this can lead to overheating and the
overheat prevention device will operate. The 'TEMPERATURE'
LED lights up.
When it has cooled down, the equipment automatically turns
itself on again.
Battery Terminal Reversal Protection
If you reverse the positive and negative terminals of the battery,
the battery charger will not operate, but no damage will be
caused.
