Installation instructions
Housed condensing units must be installed in well ventilated but not
windy locations. Ensure there is good air circulation to the condenser.
There must be no obstacles in front or to the side of the unit which would
cause air recirculation to the condenser resulting in an abnormally high
condensation temperature. The housed condensing unit must be mounted
in a level position according to best refrigeration practice.
Ensure that the condensing unit is kept away from heat sources, damp
areas, corrosive atmospheres or any sites where there is a risk of explosion.
Do not exceed the recommended service pressure.
3.4 Noise levels
Precautions must be taken during installation to avoid generating additional
noise and vibration:
-
Units must be securely mounted on a stable, rigid base,
-
Connecting pipework must be sufficiently flexible to ensure vibration
is not transmitted to the rest of the installation.
We sometimes recommend isolating material be inserted between the unit
feet and the base or between the wall mounting brackets and the wall.
This can be either an isolating pad or anti vibration mounts (not supplied)
conforming to the manufacturer's recommendations for their selection and
installation. The selection of any anti-vibration products and their potential
for absorbing vibration is not the responsibility of Tecumseh.
3.5 Mounting
Ensure the unit is securely fixed to the type of floor or wall surface upon
which it is mounted using the appropriated fixings (not supplied).
Warning, do not fix the housed unit to a wall by the rear of the casing as it
is not designed for this purpose.
3.6 Access to connections
3.7 Refrigeration connections
To ensure the quality of our products, the condensing unit has been
evacuated and charged with nitrogen.
WARNING
To maintain the quality of a TECUMSEH EUROPE condensing unit and
to ensure it functions correctly, the following precautions must be taken:
-
Check that the pipework to be connected is clean and dry.
-
Protect the casing whilst brazing pipework.
-
Purge the system with nitrogen whilst brazing and ensure the flame
is held well away from electrical equipment.
-
Insulate the suction line up to the compressor inlet to limit the
suction superheat.
-
Only use the designated refrigerant for which the compressor is
designed (see identification label).
-
Do not add any additives or colourings.
-
Ensure the pipework is well supported and as short as possible
between supports to prevent oil trapping and to aid the absorption
of vibration and pulsations.
-
Do not add oil except in cases where piping is longer than 20 m;
in this instance, use oil recommended by TECUMSEH EUROPE S.A.
In installations with vertical pipe risers, it may be necessary to create
U traps and reduce the diameter of the pipework to ensure adequate
speed for oil circulation.
-
Ensure that any pressure relief connections are directed away from
users to prevent them being exposed to any danger.
-
Cut and shape piping carefully to prevent dust and metallic particles
getting into the system. Never use a saw. Use the correctly sized bending
tool for the pipe diameter to prevent the pipe being compressed.
TECUMSEH EUROPE S.A. recommends using brazed instead
of flared connections to reduce the possibility of any leaks.
Flared connections using a connector and washer are acceptable.
-
Tape the pipes together with self-adhesive vinyl tape and attach
them to the wall with clips.

3.8 Electrical connections
The unit is fitted with a junior electrical box to which the factory installed
compressor, fan assembly, pressure switch and crankcase heater are
connected. This electrical box is connected to a metal electrical box via the
contactor and terminal block mounted on a DIN rail.
All cabling on site must conform with NF C15-100 in France or with
the current legislation in the country in question (NF EN 60204 /
60335 in the EC).
WARNING
To ensure the quality of a TECUMSEH EUROPE condensing unit,
it is essential to:

3.9 Connecting components
Please refer to the wiring diagram supplied with the unit when connecting
components.
Space is available on the DIN rail for connecting any additional components
required.
See Appendix 4, page 26.
4 START UP
4.1 Preventing leakage
All connections must be systematically checked for any leakage with an
electronic leakage detector suitable for the type of refrigerant used. around
the joints.
A leak test can be carried out before pulling a vacuum by using a charge of
nitrogen and a leak detection aerosol (refrigerant tracers not approved).
A more accurate check using an electronic leakage detector can be carried
out after charging with refrigerant.
4.2 Pulling a vacuum
Pull a deep vacuum on the installation to about 200 microns mercury with
a suitable vacuum pump.
We recommend that a vacuum is pulled simultaneously from both high and
low pressure sides of the system to ensure a uniform vacuum throughout
the system including the compressor, and to reduce the amount of time
required to obtain the vacuum.
4.3 Refrigerant charge
Charge the installation using only the refrigerant for which the unit has
been designed (see identification plate).
Charging with refrigerant should always take place in the liquid phase in
order to maintain the correct blend of zeotropic refrigerants. Only liquid
charge into the liquid line.
NEVER START THE COMPRESSOR UNDER VACUUM, WHETHER HBP OR
LBP and ensure before starting that the compressor casing is under positive
pressure. We therefore recommend slowly charging the system to 4 or 5
bar when using R-404A, and approximately 2 bar when using R-134a.
The remaining refrigerant can then be slowly charged into the suction line
when the compressor is running, until the nominal operating conditions
of the installation are reached. Complete the "Pre-start check list" below
before switching on the installation.
Warning
, it is important to prevent damage to electrical cable
insulation when using clips. A cable track installed in compliance
with NF C15-100 and separate from the refrigerant pipewor is
preferred.
See Appendix 1, page 22 for the refrigeration connections.
Ensure the electrical supply is disconnected before carrying
out any wiring or repairs of the unit.
Check that the installation power supply voltage is compatible with
that of the condensing unit (see identification plate).
Check the compatibility of the wiring diagram with that of
the installation.
Size the cables (power and control circuits) according to
the specifications of the condensing unit installed.
See table of current ratings in Appendix 6, pages 28.
Ensure that the power supply to the unit is correctly protected and
earthed.
Ensure that the unit is earthed when replacing components.
Connect all control and safety devices fitted to the unit.
Secure wiring using the clips fitted to the condensing unit.
Close the housing after wiring.
An installation that uses a pump down system must have a link fitted
between terminals 1 & 2.
The solenoid valve must be wired in series with the thermostat
(not supplied).
