Initial start-up
Settings of the amplifier
To guarantee perfect sound experience, the amplifier settings have to be adapted to the loudspeaker. In this
context, please also refer to the manual of the amplifier, which demonstrates you how to work the menu. If the
subwoofer is connected via cinch connectors, please mind the following settings:
- Speakers not designed to perform bass sound, have to be set at "SMALL" or "KLEIN" in the menu "Loudspeaker
Configuration". If you are not sure which setting to chose, please refer to the loudspeaker specifications on
"frequency range". If it reaches below 60 Hz, your loudspeaker can be run in "LARGE" mode. If the frequency range
starts above 60 Hz, the setting is "SMALL".
- Set subwoofer in the respective menu at "YES" or "NO".
- Turn the subwoofer level on the amplifier menu to "MAX", and adjust the level on the subwoofer by ear later.
- Set cross-over (if adjustable) to the speakers at 90...120 Hz.
Presetting of the subwoofer
Adjust the cross-over control on the subwoofer to a value between 100...140 Hz. If due to room-acoustic influences
some frequencies stick out unnaturally later, e.g. "boom" etc., gradually decrease to 90-100 Hz. The level control
should initially be set at (O dB).
Testing
After the set-up, switch on all devices and check if the subwoofer is working in stereo mode. Turn on the main
switch and turn the mode switch to "AUTO". If the subwoofer works, continue with "Setting of volume, cross-over,
and phase of active subwoofer".
If the small front speakers do not work properly, check the settings of the speakers (front speakers set on "SMALL",
subwoofers set on "ON"). Check correct connection and cabling.
If this does not work, check the function of the subwoofer in the surround mode of the amplifier. If the subwoofer is
working now, but not subsequently in stereo mode, older amplifiers may require a different connection mode for the
subwoofer.
Check which ELAC subwoofer you have acquired.
With the subwoofer models SUB 101 ESP, 301 ESP, 501 ESP, 373, 575, and 773, unplug the cinch connection
from the LINE IN input and connect the subwoofer by means of a loudspeaker drive cable as shown on page 17.
Then, turn to the receiver menu (if available) and change the configuration of the speakers, e.g. front speakers set
at "LARGE" and subwoofers set at "OFF" or "NO".
If you use an ELAC subwoofer of the series SUB 203 ESP, 303 ESP, and SUB 111.2 ESP, in addition to the cinch
cable connect the respective subwoofer inputs as shown on page 18. On the menu for loudspeaker configuration
(if available) of your amplifier, set the front speakers at "LARGE". The subwoofer setting may remain "ON" or "YES".
With the loudspeakers and subwoofer working according to the selected mode of the amplifier, you may now turn
to the fine tuning of the subwoofer.
Setting of volume, cross-over and phase of the active subwoofer
The settings of the level control and the slide switch for chosing the appropriate phase position depend on the room-
acoustics and must thus be found through testing. If the phase control is set at "-", the acoustic result will usually be
fine. It is advisable to chose a well-known piece of music and set the level control O of the subwoofer so as to
receive well-balanced sound without too much emphasis on the bass. If the bass appears too thick at approx.
100...120 Hz, the cross-over control may be turned down to a minimum 90-100 Hz.
