An diesem Produkt lassen sich bis zu 4 IDE-Festplatten (keine CD-/DVD-Laufwerke o.ä.!) anschließen und über eine
USB2.0-Schnittstelle betreiben. Das Produkt darf nur eingebaut in einem entsprechenden Gehäuse betrieben
werden.

Einbau und Anschluss
• Das Produkt darf nur eingebaut in ein entsprechendes Gehäuse betrieben werden. Beachten Sie die Bedienungs-
anleitung zu Ihrem Gehäuse.

• Wählen Sie über die Steckbrücken MD0, MD1 und MD2 eine der Betriebsarten.

Auf den drei Positionen darf nur eine einzige Steckbrücke gesetzt sein. Setzen Sie eine Steckbrücke
(Jumper) entweder auf die Position MD0 oder MD1 oder MD2.
• In der Betriebsart „MD1" werden die 2 Festplatten an Anschluss „1" zu einer zusammengefasst (200GB + 300GB
= 500GB). Nach außen hin sieht es für den Computer so aus, als ob nur eine einzige Festplatte vorhanden wäre.
Gleiches gilt für den Anschluss „2". Beim Einbau von vier Festplatten und der Wahl der Betriebsart „MD1" sind
später am Computer nur zwei entsprechend größere Festplatten vorhanden.
Beachten Sie, dass beim Defekt einer der je zwei Festplatten auch die Daten der anderen Festplatte verloren sind.
• In der Betriebsart „MD2" werden alle 4 Festplatten zu einer einzigen zusammengefasst (200GB + 160GB + 300GB
+ 80GB = 740GB).
Nach außen hin sieht es für den Computer so aus, als ob nur eine einzige Festplatte vorhanden wäre.
Beachten Sie, dass beim Defekt einer der vier Festplatten auch die Daten der anderen drei Festplatten verloren
sind.

• An jedem IDE-Kabel muss eines der Laufwerke als Master, das andere als Slave eingestellt sein. Achten Sie auf
richtigen Anschluss. Pin 1 muss immer mit Pin 1 verbunden sein. Pin 1 auf dem Anschluss der Festplatte liegt auf
der Seite der Strombuchse; Pin 1 auf der Platine ist markiert (siehe Abbildung oben).
JBOD 1 Slave

Verwenden Sie vorzugsweise 80polige UDMA100/133-Kabel.
• Falls Sie HDD-LEDs anschließen möchten, stehen dafür entsprechende Ausgänge zur Verfügung (H1 bis H4).
Treiber-Installation

Bei Windows 98/98SE ist zuerst der Treiber der mitgelieferten CD zu installieren.
In Windows XP sind die Treiber bereits Bestandteil des Betriebssystems, der mitgelieferte Daten-
träger ist nicht erforderlich.
Anschluss
• Schalten Sie Ihren Computer ein und warten Sie, bis das Betriebssystem vollständig geladen ist.
• Schalten Sie das Gehäuse ein, in dem der Adapter eingebaut ist.
• Verbinden Sie die USB-Buchse mit einem freien USB2.0-Port Ihres Computers.
• Selbstverständlich kann anstelle eines USB2.0-Ports auch ein herkömmlicher USB1.1-Port des PCs verwendet
werden. Die Übertragungsgeschwindigkeit ist dabei aber sehr langsam (USB1.1, etwa 1MByte/s).
• Windows erkennt nun das Laufwerk automatisch.

Eine neue Festplatte muss zuerst partitioniert und formatiert werden, bevor das Laufwerk im Datei-
Explorer erscheint und verwendet werden kann.
Festplatte partitionieren/formatieren

Bitte beachten Sie, dass Windows 98/98SE/98ME und auch ältere Versionen von Windows XP bei
größeren Festplatten (Speicherkapazität gesamt > 137GByte) Probleme haben. Das bedeutet, dass
es zu Datenverlust kommen kann.
Wir empfehlen Ihnen deshalb dringend, beim Einsatz großer Festplatten mindestens Windows XP
mit Service Pack 2 zu verwenden oder alternative Betriebssysteme, die mit so großen Festplatten
umgehen können.
• Bei Windows XP ist das Partitionieren und Formatieren sehr leicht über die Computerverwaltung möglich (klicken
Sie in der Systemsteuerung auf "Verwaltung", dann auf "Computerverwaltung", "Datenspeicher" und zuletzt auf
"Datenträgerverwaltung"). Wählen Sie dort die richtige Festplatte aus und legen Sie eine neue Partition an.
Anschließend ist diese zu formatieren. Je nach eingestelltem Modus (MD0, MD1, MD2) sind ggf. mehrere
Laufwerke zu partitionieren und zu formatieren.
• Bei Windows 98/98SE/ME dagegen sind die Befehle „FDISK" (zum Partitionieren) und „FORMAT" (zum
Formatieren) erforderlich.
Starten Sie die MSDOS-Eingabeaufforderung und geben Sie „FDISK" ein. Unter dem Menüpunkt „5. Wechseln
der aktuellen Festplatte" ist die externe Festplatte auszuwählen. Beispiel: Wenn Sie nur eine interne Festplatte
besitzen, wählen Sie die Festplatte „2". Danach kann eine primäre Partition angelegt werden.
Verlassen Sie FDISK mit der ESC-Taste und führen Sie einen Neustart durch.
Anschließend kann die Partition auf der neuen Festplatte entweder über den Datei-Explorer von Windows
formatiert werden oder mit dem „FORMAT"-Befehl in der MSDOS-Eingabeaufforderung (unbedingt darauf achten,
dass die neue Festplatte formatiert wird und nicht eine bereits vorhandene Festplatte bzw. Partition, Daten-
verlust!).
Tipps & Hinweise
• USB-Geräte erlauben das Ein- und Ausstecken während dem Betrieb.
Sie sollten dabei aber beachten, dass evtl. Dateien beschädigt werden könnten oder Windows abstürzen könnte,
wenn bei einer Datenübertragung das Verbindungskabel herausgezogen wird (bzw. das Gehäuse ausgeschaltet
oder das Netzteil abgesteckt wird).
Bei Windows ME/XP erscheint bei USB-Betrieb ein Pfeil-Symbol in der Menüleiste, über das man Windows
anweisen kann, das Gerät zu „trennen", die Datenübertragungen also so zu beenden, dass man das Verbindungs-
kabel gefahrlos abstecken kann.
• USB2.0-Geräte sind abwärtskompatibel. Das bedeutet, dass das USB2.0-Gehäuse mit der eingebauten Festplat-
te auch an herkömmlichen „langsamen" USB1.1-Ports funktioniert, aber dann eben nur in der maximalen USB1.1-
Geschwindigkeit (effektiv ca. max. 1MByte/s). Bei USB2.0 sind mehrere MBytes/s möglich.
• Unter DOS bzw. Windows NT ist kein Betrieb möglich.
• Es dürfen nur IDE-Festplatten angeschlossen werden. Der Betrieb von CD-/DVD-Laufwerken o.ä. ist nicht
möglich.
Entsorgung

Entsorgen Sie das Produkt am Ende seiner Lebensdauer gemäß den geltenden gesetzlichen
Bestimmungen.

Installation and Connection
• The product must only be operated when it is mounted in an appropriate case. Please note the operating
instructions for your case.

• Select one of the operating types via jumpers MD0, MD1 and MD2.

On the three positions only one single jumper must be put. Put the jumper either on position MD0 or
MD1 or MD2.
• In operating type "MD1", the 2 hard disks on connection "1" are combined to one (200GB + 300GB = 500GB). From
the outside it looks for the computer as if there is only one single hard disk available.
The same is the case for connection "2". When installing four hard disks and selecting operating type "MD1" there
are ony two correspondingly larger hard disks available on the computer.
Please note, that in the case of a defect of one of the two hard disks, the data on the other hard disk will also get
lost.

• On each IDE cable one of the drives has to be set to master, the other one to slave. Please make sure to connect

it correctly. Pin 1 always has to be connected with pin 1. Pin 1 on the connection of the hard disk is on the side
of the power socket; pin 1 on the circuit board is marked (see illustration above).
JBOD

Preferably use 80 pin UDMA100/133 cable.
• If you want to connect HDD LEDs, there are respective outputs available for it (H1 to H4).
Driver Installation

With Windows 98/98SE, the driver of the CD contained in delivery must be installed first.
In Windows XP the drivers are already a component of the operating system, the data carrier included
in delivery is not necessary.
Connection
• Switch your computer on and wait until the operating system is completely booted.
• Turn the case on in which the adapter is installed.
• Connect the USB socket with a free USB2.0 port of your computer.
• Of course, a conventional USB1.1 port of the PC can also be used instead of a USB2.0 port. However, in this case
the transmission speed is very low (USB1.1, about 1MByte/s).
• Windows now recognises the drive automatically.

A new hard disk has to be partitioned and formatted first before the drive appears in the file explorer
and can be used.
Partitioning / Formatting the Hard Disk

Please note that Windows 98/98SE/98ME and also older versions of Windows XP will have problems
with larger hard disks (total memory capacity > 137GByte). This means that there may be loss of data.
This is why we urgently recommend at least Windows XP with service pack 2 if you are using large
hard disks, or use alternative operating systems that can deal with such large hard disks.
• For Windows XP partitioning and formatting it is very easy via computer administration (click "Management" in
system control, then "Computer Management", "Data Storage" and at last "Disk Management"). This is where you
select the correct hard disk and create a new partition. Afterwards it has to be formatted. Depending on the set
mode (MD0, MD1, MD2) several drives may have to be partitioned and formatted.
• Windows 98/98SE/ME requires the commands „FDISK" (for partitioning) and „FORMAT" (for formatting).
Start the MSDOS prompt and enter "FDISK". Under menu item "5. Changing of current hard disk" the external hard
disk has to be selected. Example: If you only have one internal hard disk, select hard disk "2". Afterwards a primary
partition can be created.

Leave FDISK with the ESC button and reboot your computer.
Afterwards, the partition on the new hard disk can be formatted via the Windows File Explorer or via the command
„FORMAT" in the MSDOS prompt (make absolutely sure to format the new hard disk and not an already existing
hard disk or partition. Data loss!).
Tips & Notes
• USB devices are hot swappable, they can be plugged-in and -out during operation.
However, bear in your mind that files might get damages or Windows might crash, if the connecting cable is pulled
out during data transmission (or the case is switched off or the mains adapter is disconnected).

MD1 In Windows ME/XP you can see an arrow in the menu bar during USB operation by means of which you can instruct

Windows to disconnect the device, i.e. to finish data transmission in order to be able to disconnect the connecting

H2 • USB2.0 devices are downward compatible. This means that the USB2.0 case with the built-in hard disk also works

on conventional "slower" USB1.1 ports – but in this case only with the maximum USB1.1 speed (effectively approx.
max. 1MByte/s). For USB2.0 several MBytes/s are possible.
• Operation is not possible under DOS or Windows NT.
• Only IDE hard disks may be connected. The operation of CD/DVD drives or similar is not possible.
Disposal

At the end of its service life, dispose of the product in accordance with the valid legal regulations.
