Automatic raid rebuilding ("Raid Rebuild")
With DIP switch "2" you can switch between two functions:
1. Automatic rebuilding ("OFF" setting)
If a hard disk of a RAID group is faulty, a spare hard disk will be connected automatically and
the data restored accordingly.
The hard disk on the "last" port is used as a spare hard disk ("SPARE").
Examples:
• 4 hard disks on ports 0-3 confi gured as RAID5: 3 hard disks on ports 0-2 are operated as
RAID5, 1 hard disk on Port 3 functions as a spare hard disk ("SPARE")
• 5 hard disks on ports 0-4 confi gured as RAID10: 4 hard disks on ports 0-3 are operated as
RAID10, 1 hard disk on Port 4 functions as a spare hard disk ("SPARE").
• 3 hard disks on ports 0, 3, 4 confi gured as RAID1: 2 hard disks on ports 0 and 3 are operated
as RAID1, 1 hard disk on port 4 functions as a spare hard disk ("SPARE").
2. Manual rebuilding ("ON" setting)
If one hard disk of the RAID group is faulty, the data will not be restored automatically.
Only when the faulty hard disk is replaced by a new one, will the data for the RAID be restored
(depending on the RAID mode!).

Installation

If in doubt about how to install the device correctly, please contact an EXPERT
or a specialist workshop and let them do the installation!
Incorrect installation can cause damage to the product, your computer and all
connected devices.
Caution, lethal hazard!
Switch off the computer where the controller card is to be installed and turn
off all connected devices. Disconnect the computer from the mains voltage,
unplug the mains plug! Just turning off the on/off switch is not enough!
• Open the computer, remove the housing cover carefully.
Since the controller card has no contact for a PCI or PCIe slot, but only requires a
SATA connection and power supply, the controller card may also be used to build an
external RAID system.
• Open your computer's case and carefully remove the cover.
• Confi gure the controller card prior to installation.
• Look for a free slot, remove the corresponding slot bracket and fasten the controller card in
place with a screw.
The controller card has no contact for a PCI or PCIe-slot; therefore, it is not impor-
tant where the controller card is attached.
To install the plug-in card in a fl at computer housing, a low-profi le slot bracket is provided.
Remove the long slot bracket from the controller card and then mount the low-profi le slot
bracket on the controller card.
• Connect the power supply connector "J2" with your computer's mains adapter. If no appropri-
ate power connection is free, use the Y power cable provided.
• The SATA connector "P5" is to be connected to a free SATA port on your mainboard or a SATA
controller.
• One SATA hard disk can be connected to each of the fi ve SATA connectors "P0", "P1", "P2",
"P3" and "P4", depending on the selected RAID mode.
• If needed, corresponding LEDs can be connected to the connectors J1 or J3 (pay attention
to the polarity).
• Place all the cables so they cannot slip out of their connections. Fasten all the cables so they
cannot get into the PC fan (e.g. use cable fasteners).
• Close the PC housing.
• Reconnect your computer and monitor to the mains voltage and switch on all devices.
• If your computer does not start correctly, switch it off immediately and check all the settings
and cable connections.
Before opening the computer again, it needs to be separated from the mains voltage
again, see above!
Driver/Software Installation, Start-up
Please note:
No driver installation is required for the controller card.
In the RAID mode of operation, the SATA controller or your mainboard detects the
RAID set as a single normal hard disk.
If you do not need a RAID function and want to use the connected hard disks as
individual hard disks ("INDIVIDUAL" DIP switch setting), the used SATA controller or
your mainboard should support the port multiplier function; otherwise, no hard disk
will be detected.
For the confi guration or the control of the RAID you can install software, which can be found in
the "DiskArray\1to5HWRaid" directory on the enclosed CD.
Programming/changing the RAID mode
Changing from one RAID mode to another at fi rst requires switching from the RAID
to the "INDIVIDUAL" mode of operation. Only then it is allowed to switch from the
"INDIVIDUAL" mode of operation to another RAID mode.
To program or change the RAID mode (all data on the hard disks will be lost, perform a backup
beforehand!), proceed as follows:
1. Confi gure DIP switches 3, 4 and 5 according the desired RAID mode. Connect the hard
disks with the connectors "P0" to "P4", connect the connector "P5" with your SATA controller
or mainboard.
2. Hold the "SW2" button pressed and switch on the operating voltage for the controller card
(i.e. switch on the computer).
3. If the piezo buzzer is deactivated, release the "SW2" button only when the system has
rebooted If the piezo buzzer is activated, release the "SW2" button only when the signal
sound of the piezo buzzer tones down.
4. In the mainboard BIOS/setup (if the controller card is connected to a SATA port on the main-
board) or with the SATA controller message during the system start (if the controller card is
connected to a PCI/PCIe SATA controller) the RAID should now be displayed (e.g. RAID5
is displayed as a SATA hard disk with the name "TWN-L H/W RAID5" in the BIOS/setup).
