Selection of the Raid Mode
Adjust the desired RAID mode via the DIP switch prior to installing the controller card (the "ON"
position is marked on the DIP switch):

Use DIP switch #1 for switching on or off the piezo buzzer ("ON" = switched on,
"OFF" = switched off).
DIP switch #2 is used to select the rebuilding mode ("REBUILD") ("ON" = new hard
disk is connected to the same connector, "OFF" = hard disk at the last connector is
used = "SPARE DRIVE").
• "RAID0"
The data is distributed on two hard disks, the data transfer rate increases. The total capacity
is double that of the smallest of the two hard disks. A RAID0 always consists of two hard
disks. Examples:
RAID0: HDD0=300GB, HDD1=500GB, total=600GB (-> not recommended!)
HDD0=500GB, HDD1=500GB, total=1000GB
• "RAID1"
The data is mirrored, i.e. the same data is stored on both hard disks. The total capacity is that
of the smallest hard disk.
The ideal case is to connect two identical hard disks (the same version and capacity). Other-
wise, the smaller of the two hard disks defi nes the maximum capacity. A RAID1 always consists
of two hard disks. Examples:
RAID1: HDD0=80GB, HDD1=500GB, total=80GB (-> not recommended!)
HDD0=300GB, HDD1=300GB, total=300GB
Note: If you set the jumpers to "RAID1", a "RAID10" will be set up automatically, if 4
hard disks are connected.
• „RAID10" (also called "RAID0/1")
This is a combination of RAID0 and RAID1. Therefore, a total of 4 hard disks are required,
2
which should be the same version (same manufacturer, same type). Otherwise, the capacity
decreases as with RAID0 or RAID1.
1
• "RAID0"
RAID5 not only offers a higher data transmission rate, but also tolerates failure of one of the
hard disks connected. At least 3 hard disks must be used (if possible of the same version).
4
The capacity available for data can be calculated according to the formula x = (n-1)/n (where
„n" is the number of hard disks. With 3 hard disks, this is 2/3 of the total capacity.
Your data is distributed over all of the hard disks, as with RAID0, the same applies for the par-
ity information. Therefore, during write operations, the rate of data transmission is lower than
with RAID0 or RAID10 because of high administrative complexity (parity information must be
created/calculated and written to the hard disk).
Advantage of RAID5 compared to RAID10: It is dispensed with one hard disk.
• "JBOD" (also called "BIG")
Two or more hard disks are joined together into one large virtual hard disk. For the operating
system, this is equivalent to only one hard disk being available.
• "RAID3"
Here, the data is saved on one or more hard disks, a separate hard disk is only used for the
storage of parity data. This setting is only suitable for specifi c purposes.
J3
• "CLONE"
This function is similar to "RAID1" but ALL the hard disks connected contain the same data.
This function can be used for instance to copy the same data onto several hard disks.
• "INDIVIDUAL"
All connected hard disks are functioning as individual hard disks, this means that the control-
ler card functions as a normal port multiplier.
This operation mode requires that the SATA controller, to which the controller card is con-
nected via the connector "P5",also supports the port multiplier. Otherwise, no hard disk or just
one is detected.
