Handling
Operation is only permissible in dry indoor areas. The product must not get damp or
wet! There is a risk of a life-threatening electric shock!
Never use the product immediately after it has been taken from a cold room to a
warm one. The condensation that forms might destroy your unit. The mains adapter
also involves a danger to life due to an electric shock!
Allow the product to reach room temperature, before connecting it to the power
supply and putting it into use. This may take several hours.
• Avoid the following unfavourable environmental conditions at the installation location and
during transportation:
- Damp or excess air humidity
- Extreme cold (<5°C) or heat (>35°C), direct sunlight
- Dust or flammable gases, fumes or solvents
- Strong vibrations, impacts or blows,
- Strong magnetic fields such as those found close to machinery or loudspeakers
• Any maintenance or repair work must only be carried out by authorised personnel.
• When setting up the product, make sure that the cables are neither kinked nor pinched.
• Do not move the product with an installed hard disc when the latter is in operation. The
read/write heads inside the hard disc can get in contact with the magnetic disc due to
movement. Not only may this lead to a loss of data but the hard disc may get damaged! The
same applies to the 30-second period after the hard disc enclosure has been switched off until
the magnetic disc in the hard disc has come to a standstill.
• When using the included foot make sure that the hard disc enclosure is positioned on an even,
stable and sufficiently big surface so that it cannot tilt over or fall down.
Cleaning
Before cleaning the device, disconnect it from the power supply. The use of a dry, soft, lint-free
cloth is sufficient to clean the product.
Do not use aggressive detergents as this can cause discolouration.
Do not press too hard on the surface when cleaning in order to avoid scratch marks.
Dust can easily be removed using a clean, long-haired brush and a vacuum cleaner.
Tips & notes
a) USB2.0/1.1
• USB devices can be connected and disconnected during operation.
You should, however, take into account that data may be corrupted or the operating system
may crash if the connection cable is disconnected while data are being transferred (or the
cabinet is switched off or the power unit is disconnected).
In Windows ME/XP, an arrow symbol is displayed in the menu bar when a USB device is in
operation. Click this arrow symbol to „separate" the device, i.e. to terminate data transmission,
so you can disconnect the connection cable without risking losing data.
• USB2.0 devices are backwards compatible. This means that the hard disc enclosure with the
inserted SATA hard disc also functions when connected to common USB1.1 ports - but then
only at the maximal USB1.1 speed (effectively, ca. 1MBytes/s; up to 35MBytes/s are possible
with USB2.0 depending on the USB controller).
• When the hard disc enclosure is to be connected via a USB hub, it must support the USB2.0
transmission mode so that a maximum speed is possible.
• The USB hard disc enclosure cannot be operated with DOS, Windows NT or Windows 98.
• If the hard disc enclosure is supplied with power via the power adaptor, and it is turned on, the
LED at the front side will be lit. The LED flashes when data is read or written to the installed
hard disk.
b) eSATA operation
• n contrast to USB, the hard drive enclosure may not be detected when it is connected to a
computer that is powered up; or ,when it is activated only when the operating system has
already booted.
If so, restart Windows with the hard disk enclosure still switched on.
The recognition of the hard disk enclosure, with computer/operating system running, depends
on the eSATA controller used and its drivers (or the eSATA connection on the motherboard
and its drivers).
• As mentioned used, in Windows an arrow symbol is displayed in the menu bar when a USB
device is in operation. Click this arrow symbol to „separate" the device, i.e. to terminate data
transmission, so you can disconnect the connection cable without risking losing data. It is
possible that the above procedure is impossible with eSATA, depending on the used eSATA
controller and its drivers.
In which case, do not turn off or unplug the hard disk without having shutdown the computer
first. First, close down the operating system, and only then turn off or unplug the hard disk
enclosure. Otherwise loss of data is possible!
Disposal
Electrical and electronic products do not belong in the household waste!
When disposing of an unserviceable product, do so in line with the relevant statutory
regulations.
