• Do not pull the plug-in power supply unit from the mains socket by pulling the cable
• Do not leave packing materials unattended. They may become dangerous

Installation of a hard disc
• Remove both screws at the back of the enclosure.
• Slide the insert out of the aluminium frame, then remove the plastic lid at the front.
• Position a SATA hard disc correctly on the terminal strip of the board and screw the hard disc
tight in the drawer with the two appropriate screws.
• Place the plastic lid on the insert minding the correct orientation.
A plastic strip is supplied for hard discs with a lower height, which can be inserted
between the plastic lid and the hard disc. This prevents the plastic lid from bending
inwards.
• Slide the insert back into the aluminium frame minding the correct orientation of the insert.

Driver installation
The drivers for the hard disc enclosure are contained in your operating system. Thus, no data
carrier is supplied. Please keep in mind that an appropriate controller is necessary to operate a
USB2.0 device (e.g. integrated on most main boards; older computers can be backfitted with an
additional plug-in card).
Connection
• Switch the enclosure off (on/off switch located at the rear).
• Connect the round low-voltage plug of the included power adaptor to the corresponding socket
on the back of the hard disc enclosure.
• Connect the power adapter to the mains voltage.
a) Operation via USB
• Switch on your PC and wait until the operating system has finished loading.
• Connect the hard disc to a free USB port on the computer and switch it on.
• Windows recognises the hard disc enclosure during first operation and completes the driver
installation (the drivers are contained in Windows (e.g. Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7)).
b) Operation via eSATA
• Switch the computer off (first save all open data and shut down the operating system).
• Connect the hard disc to the eSATA port on your computer using an eSATA cable.
• Switch on the hard disc enclosure.
• Switch on your computer and wait until the operating system has booted completely.
Partitioning / formatting the hard drive
• In Windows XP, Windows Vista or Windows 7, the partitioning and formatting is very easy to
perform via the Control Panel. Select e.g. in Windows XP the function „Administrative Tools",
then „Computer Management", „Storage and then „Disk Management" in the Control Panel.
This is where you select the correct hard disc and create a new partition.
• After partitioning, the newly created partition has to be formatted (fast formatting is sufficient;
„normal" formatting may take very long to complete depending on the size of the hard disc).
To connect the hard drive to a computer, use either the USB connection or the
eSATA connection. It is not possible to connect via eSATA and via USB at the same
time!
The fast transmission mode is only used when a USB2.0 port is used; the maximal
speed of data transmission for a USB1.1 is lower accordingly.
Why is this procedure different to that with USB?
The external hard drive might not be recognised via eSATA, when it is connected to
a computer that is already running, or if it is switched on after the operating system
has already booted.
This, however, depends on the eSATA controller (on the motherboard or plug-in
card), on its driver and your operating system.
If the external hard disc is not recognized, please reboot your operating system,
while the external hard disc is left on.
A new hard disc must be partitioned and formatted before the directory appears e.g.
in the Windows file manager and before it can be used.
