The so-called "natural self-protection time" is the maximum period of time that the skin can be exposed to the
sun without the skin becoming red. Depending on the skin type, the natural self-protection time lies between
3 minutes (skin type I) and 90 minutes (skin type VI). The time is determined at the UV index level 8 (midday
sun in summer in Central Europe).
If the UV index is higher (e.g. mountains, tropics, Mediterranean) or when there is reflection/dissipation close
to water, sand or snow, the natural self-protection time is greatly reduced. Pre-tanned skin has a higher natural
self-protection time (this does not apply to tanning lotion tans, but only "properly" tanned skin).
Sunscreen lotion provides sunlight protection and thus extends the time that can be spent in the sun without
suffering sunburn (natural self-protection time * sun protection factor).
If skin has a self-protection time of 10 minutes, a sun protection factors of 10 allows a sun-bathing time of 100
minutes. To be safe, however, this time should not be more than half used!
Repeated application of sunscreen does not increase the total protection time.
d) The UV Sensor in the Wristwatch
The UV sensor is the small round surface at the bottom of the display (see chapter 7, pos. 7) which is labelled "UV
SENSOR" above. Clean the cover glass before measurement.
Point the sensor as directly as possible to the sun, move the wristwatch a little during measurement, in order to find a
maximum value (where necessary activate the highest value function, see next page).
• After the UV index mode is activated, a measurement of the UV radiation and update of the measurement display occurs
every 2 seconds for the next 5 minutes.
• After the initial 5 minutes, a measurement is carried out every 10 second in order to save power.
