Emissivity

The emissivity is a parameter which describes the thermal radiation of a material (compared to
an ideal black surface).
Most organic and coated or oxidized materials have an emissivity near 0.95 (pre-set in the
thermometer). Measurements on shiny or polished metal surfaces will cause inaccurate results.
To measure such surfaces, they must be prepared with tape or paint. Allow the tape to reach
the same temperature as the surface and measure the temperature of the tape or paint.
