d) When the rechargeable battery is connected with the correct polarity, not defective (high-impedance/disconnect-
ed) and connected to the mains, the charging process begins in less than one second. Depending on the charge
state and condition of the connected battery (e.g., battery old or new; battery flat, etc.), the four LEDs (Figure 2,
Pos. 5 to 8) flash or light up and show the charging progress.
With a flat battery, the first red LED (Fig. 2, Pos. 5) flashes. When the first red LED (Figure 2, Pos. 5) stays lit,
the battery is charged to 25%.
The next red LED flashes (Fig. 2, Pos. 6). When this red LED (Figure 2, Pos. 6) stays lit, the battery is charged
to 50%.
The next red LED flashes (Fig. 2, Pos. 7). When this red LED (Figure 2, Pos. 7) stays lit, the battery is charged
to 75%.
The next LED, "FULL", flashes green (Figure 2, Pos. 8). When the battery is fully charged, the "FULL" LED
(Fig. 2, Pos. 8) stays lit. The charger now gives the battery only low current for trickle charging.
Charging processes vary in length. The charging process of a large battery with a capacity of e.g., 230 Ah,
depending on the condition of the battery (battery is old or new; battery is flat or deeply discharged, etc.), can
in fact take several days.
If a battery that is to be charged has been deeply discharged, the charger begins first with a special refresh-
ment programme (pulse charging). In this case, the first LED for the charging status (Figure 2, Pos. 5) flashes
in a fast rhythm (0.5 seconds on/off). In the initial phase of the charging process, the development of the
voltage level is monitored. If the voltage for a 12 v battery is above 10.5 v (24 v battery above 21 v), the
charger switches back to the previously selected charging programme.
The charger automatically detects whether you have connected a 12 v or a 24 v battery. A battery with
a voltage between 4.5 v and 10.5 v is detected as a 12 v battery. A battery with a voltage between 16 v
and 21 v is detected as a 24 v battery.
If the no-load voltage of a 12 v battery is less than 4.5 v (24 v battery less than 16 v), the charger auto-
matically switches into standby mode. Such batteries are generally so damaged that they can no longer
be charged.
e) End the charging process when the "100%" LED (Figure 2, Pos. 8) stays lit. To do this, remove the battery from
the charger and then pull the mains plug out of the mains outlet.
